How about Ben Davies as a potential dark horse? The Swansea
professional is
certainly in excellent form and high spirits after winning the recent IPA Strachan UK Tour.
He did so with an 8-7 final win over three-time world champion, Gareth Potts.
Davies has also won a world title during his days in the PPPO ranks.
On his way to Tour success Davies defeated compatriot Tom Cousins in the semi-final.
Cousins is highly regarded by his fellow pros and while he’s never done himself justice at Blackpool, he certainly has the game for a big occasions.
Like Davies, he has been a winner this year, defeating Phil Harrison on the final of the Vauxhall Grand Prix at Great Yarmouth.
He also lifted the Professional Cup in 2010.
It's back to England for another contender and that's not something you might have thought just a few months ago.
However, out of nowhere the 'Fox' is back. England skipper Lee Kendall has emerged as a real threat after some remark- able form on the UK Tour.
He reached the finals of both opening Tours and while losing both to Gareth Potts, the former world finalist is clearly
Craig Waddingham 13
Kendall puts his rejuvenation down to extra practice session and it would be a fairytale story if he fulfilled a long cherished ambition to become world champion.
Brenton Collier
A man previously mentioned, Carl Morris, is another force to be reckoned with. He and Northern Ireland's Morray Dolan just missed out on a top eight seeding and will be there or thereabouts at the business end, we suspect.
Jimmy Croxton is upto 11th in the rankings after successive last 16 finishes. But that only tells half a story as he won numerous matches to just fall short of the televised stages.
And who would have bet on Craig Waddingham reaching the semi-finals 12 months ago? He became the first qualifier for 18 years to reach thepenultimate round, falling 10-5 to Potts after a glorious run.
Indeed, his performances should give hope to all competitors that no game is guaranteed to provide the obvious result or certain champion.
Clayton Attard
back to somewhere near his best.
