ECONOMY-SCHMONMY What’s Going On:

Housing sales are still down and the prices are still up, so despite all the proclamation of how well everything is, the figures are not jiving with the speeches. How It Could Affect You: In any event, a down economy is simply the time to focus on simple upgrades and to offer all the products you have. Remember that people may be downsizing, but to some that means they will buy a $6,000 car audio system instead of a $45,000 custom chopper.

HAWAII SURVIVE-O What’s Going On:

The recent squashing of anti-aftemarket proposals in Hawaii are not really the big story here. The story is how the retailers are evolving there to be proactive with regard to noise issues, and how they are looking to promote a message of basic respect of others when using the powerful systems we provide for them. How It Could Affect You: This is something to watch. Success could determine a model for other states to follow. However, we need to learn the lesson of keeping a close eye on bills and proposals that could affect or businesses.

DISHING OUT A BLOCKBUSTER

What’s Going On: So Dish Satellite has acquired Blockbuster out of bankruptcy for $320 million ($228 million in cash) and the world is abuzz. But what the heck does that have to do with us in the mobile electronics realm? Well, today it doesn’t have an immediate effect, but in the next year to 18 months, the overall mobile entertainment landscape will be changing quickly. Dish now has a viable satellite delivery system, active studio and network distribution deals, 1,700 store fronts and a particularly relevant ownership of 700 MHz frequencies. How It Could Affect You: Dish could be the first real company to establish themselves as a pay-for-use or sub-

scription-based entertainment media outlet. Not reliant upon delivery, distribution or content, the only hurdle is product. If they succeed, they will be the go-to service in which to integrate our products. Stay tuned (pun intended)!

REMEMBER WHEN 4G SEEMED FAST? What’s Going On: Seems like everybody’s talking about 4G, though the reality is it’s being delivered in relatively few markets. AT&T’s recent announcement of its intent to purchase of T-Mobile is — in part — about ramping up the carrier’s speed to market with 4G. How It Could Affect You: As fast as technology advances, we as users are surpassing its capacity to deliver. Wireless data is at its maximum and relief in that realm, short of limiting users bandwidth, is not in sight soon. Other wireless options beyond the networks we currently use will need to be launched and launched soon. So while we still have dreams of connected devices on the highway, don’t expect cellular-based delivery of video for the back seat while doing 65. We’ll be doing well to get Pandora nationally for awhile.
