Sales Snapshot STATS

Compared to February, March numbers were:

23.9% Flat

51.3%

24.8% Going Down

Going Up

March is typically a tumultuous time for retail, as post holi-

day “payback” on credit card purchases is in full swing, and the weather is in different phases depending on part of the country: warm (enough) on the West Coast, still snowing in some Mid- west and East Coast areas, and downright dangerous in others. Most of the retailers who responded credited tax returns and improving weather for the sales increase. Those who indi- cated a downward trend predictably named the economy in general, and gas prices specifically as the root cause.

UP: “It’s tax season, and people still have some money left

between the two months.” - BC Creations, Cleveland, N.C. FLAT: “Weather hasn’t changed much in Chicago. It’s cold,

but not as cold as February. Customers are still purchasing remote starters.” - Solomons Finest, Chicago, Ill.

DOWN: “Sales were very strong beginning just before Christmas and continued through the first week in March. Since then, sales have been lukewarm.” - Quality Car Stereo, Pensacola, Fla.
