Jeff Soal founded Jeffrey Soal & Associates (JSA) in early 2010, having worked for many years in the City and Edinburgh at premier UK and US firms. Jeff specialises in private equity, venture capital and M&A, as well as advising on fund structures and related regulatory issues. He boasts particular expertise in cross-border work, notably in carrying out international reorganisations and restructuring for large blue chip corporate groups. This month, Jeff speaks to Finance Monthly about his firm and its work.

eff founded JSA on the core beliefs that if a client instructs him then they should get him; that


clients should get value for money and that clients should get real business, not just legal, advice from lawyers. He explained: “Too many firms push work down in the pursuit of profit over service – it’s highly inefficient for clients and highly profitable for firms because so much work is duplicated (as are the fees) and clients end up paying premium fees for a less than premium service. At JSA we believe in personal, partner service – it’s more efficient, more cost effective and the clients get the best advice from somebody who is intimately involved with and understands their business. We have a small core team which works on every transaction and I make sure that I am at the coal face on every deal.” It has been a busy first year for JSA. Since founding

an international air cargo company and the establishment of a global fund management firm. However, completing a deal for Exploration Logistics Group (ExLogs) remains his proudest achievement in the first year. This transaction saw MML Capital Partners, a leading private equity firm and transatlantic investor, take a minority interest in Exploration Logistics, the specialist provider of remote site medical, health, safety and mine clearance services. Jeff puts the success of this deal down to taking the time to build the relationship with his clients. “I realise that clients put their own judgment on the line when they instruct a lawyer and I go out of my way to earn the confidence they place in me,” he said. “Ultimately they know that I will deliver; that I give them the best advice; that I provide
