changing colours

Skin colour is pre- determined at birth, but, as we age, certain factors can change the uniformity of our skin colour in the form of pigmentation.


The term pigmentation is most commonly used to describe the darkening of a person’s skin colour, usually in patchy areas of the skin. However, the correct term for this is hyperpigmentation and is different to hypopigmentation, which is where skin suffers a loss in colour.


Hyperpigmentation is usually a result of an overproduction or uneven distribution of melanin and is most commonly caused by UV exposure, particularly spots of pigmentation found in exposed areas such as the face, upper chest and the hands.


“When UV light hits the skin, it stimulates an increased production of skin pigments, which is what we call tanning. This is the skin’s major defence against further UV damage. In addition to tanning skin, ultraviolet light worsens melasma and causes sun spots,” writes Dr Leslie Baumann in her book The Skin Type Solution: The Revolutionary Guide to Finding and Caring For your Skin Type.


Unfortunately, because many of us weren’t aware of the importance of sunscreen when growing up, many of us, and your clients, have a good chance of seeing some form of pigmentation crop up somewhere on the body with age.
