Actress Una Crawford O’Brien

It’s been a year since Actress Una Crawford O’Brien waved goodbye to her TV alter ego Renee Phelan, the woman she played for 11 years on Fair City. In the meantime Una is busy treading the boards in Grumpy Old Women and is now known as the face for Cash For Gold Ireland. Oonagh Clarke catches up with Una in Avoca Café in Dublin for a chat about beauty problems, tips and secrets...

Oonagh: I have to say, in the flesh you are every bit as glamorous as Renee. Are there any other similarities between the character and the woman who played her?

Una: Yes, there are some other similarities other than how we look, of course. She is a tough woman, but I would definitely say I have a much softer side. I still have people coming up to me every day saying, ‘Ah, poor Christie’, but really I am a lot nicer than Renee. I swear!

Oonagh: Tell me about your beauty regime?

Una: I cleanse my skin morning and night; I never go to bed without cleansing, no matter how late at night. I take my eye make-up off with olive oil, a tip that I picked up in the make-up department of Fair City.

I have been going to the same hairdresser for the last few years, Martin, in Origin, Ranelagh. He knows what I like and I like what he does.

Oonagh: What is your best feature?

Una: My eyes.

Oonagh: Do you think Irish women are beautiful, if so what is beautiful about them?

Una: I think Irish woman are attractive rather than beautiful. With our pale skin and freckles we are not what is perceived as beautiful

at the present time, but when we know how to use what we have. Irish women can be gorgeous.

Oonagh: What are your beauty concerns?

Una: That my skin is ageing and the lines are getting deeper!

Oonagh: Do you go to beauty salons?

Una: I don’t go to a salon as often as I would like but when I do I visit Revive in Milltown.

Oonagh: What’s your desert island product?

Una: Mascara - the more luxurious the better.

Oonagh: What woman do you admire and why?

Una: Helen Mirren and Judy Dench. Both are older women with style and class and wonderful actresses.

Oonagh: Would you have surgery?

Una: I don’t think I would do the surgery thing, but I would be open to fillers or Botox™and whatever else is there.

Oonagh: Finally, what would you most like to change about yourself

Una: The ageing process! And my washerwoman hands!
