Skins has returned for their 5th series, with a whole new gang of controversial characters. We caught up with a few of the new members when they were on their eight day event tour around the UK last month with musicians Katy B, The Wombats, Morning Parade and Kissy Sell Out.
Sebastian De Souza plays ‘Matty’
Tell us about your character? Matty is a very enigmatic boy, he’s incredibly mysterious and seems to appear in this series out of nowhere. As a character within the group, his position is ambiguous and, initially, very confusing. He has a definite charisma but is very difficult to pigeonhole, he’s just one of those characters that could go either way. It seems to me that by the end of all this he could end up being Charlie Manson or he could end up being Jesus – who knows?
What characteristics does your character bring to the group? It’s difficult to say. He’s there to bring a drama, a mystery – he’s there to bring answers to those questions that he provokes. I have to say though, I don’t think it’ll be until the next series that the mirror
will properly be turned on him and we’ll find out exactly what he has the potential to give to this group of fiercely diverse characters.
If you could play someone else in the cast who would it be? Frankie or Alo. Frankie, to me, is the most interesting personality in this show. She’s a true artist; she’s one of these pure souls, one of these very unusual examples of a severe concentration of love, hate, light and darkness combined. She could smoke a joint then move a mountain, she could write a symphony then go and laugh and joke with her friends. She’s a free spirit and nothing is too big or too small, but at the same time, only very specific things matter to Frankie. Dakota plays her brilliantly.
Freya Mavor plays ‘Mini’
Tell us about your character? Mini is quite a feisty figure; she’s the top dog of the school… or at least she likes to think she is. She’s witty and she definitely likes people to hear her opinion. She likes to stir things up, test people and manipulate things around her to see what would happen, but I don’t think she means to do bad. She doesn’t really think about the consequences of her actions a lot of the time though. She goes out with Nick, it’s not your typical romance. I think she needs him to uphold her world, I think he’s just a building block in the foundations of her master plan. She’s getting what she wants but not what she needs in that sense.
If you could play someone else in the cast who would it be and why? Rich because
I think he’s a really great character and he is based quite a lot on Jamie Brittain. It’s brilliant that he gets to have this connection with the writer and creator.
Tell us something about you... I love movies like ‘Bullets Over Broadway’ I love Woody Allen! ‘Hunger’ by Steve McQueen, and the classics like ‘Donnie Darko’. I’m a big fan of Jack Nicholson and Tilda Swinton. She’s a brilliant actress. Music, I like a mix of things. A lot of old acoustic things like Joni Mitchell and Nick Drake. I love Johanna Newton, Laura Marling, Crystal Castles, Phoenix, and Two Door Cinema Club. I also love a bit of Beyoncé, and a bit of Rihanna. I love the diva pop stars, the big ballsy girls and girls with attitude!
Laya Lewis plays ‘Liv’
Tell us about your character? On first impressions she is the cool one of the group, she is very much laid back. Liv doesn’t really care about anything, she just wants to have fun. She’s that funny comment in the awkward situation. Under all that she has a lot of substance to her and her coolness is just a face.
What has been the most embarrassing moment on set? Oh all the sex scenes, Liv seems to have so many! She is clearly the promiscuous one! I think one of her adventures is possibly the most full on sex scene we have ever had on Skins!
What is the one memory that you will take away from filming? I think it has to be the last scene of my episode. We are down on Millennium
You can catch SKINS on E4 every Thursday at 10pm.

Square in Bristol, it was a beautiful summer evening, the sun was just setting and we wrapped after a really intense day. I was so happy, the day had gone well and the whole setting was just so
nice. The director took me to a side and we both just couldn’t speak but we both knew what each other were feeling, it was just a sweet moment.
