Message from Ken Burns Dear Fellow Traveler,

I am pleased, along with my partners at Tauck, to invite you on the first of many experiences we are creating as part of Tauck’s Ken Burns American Journeys. This event, exploring the myriad stories of the Civil War, was my first choice when discussing our collaboration.

I was inspired to craft this event with Tauck for many of the same reasons I was inspired to create the film The Civil War. Because to understand who we are as Americans, we must understand the four horrible years in our national life when we tore ourselves in two.

Washington, DC, is the perfect place to do this, as geographically it is the heart of the conflict. You will visit the places I consider hallowed ground and hear the stories of the individual men and women who shaped the course of our country – Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglass and the unsung heroes who fought on both sides.

When my co-producer, writer Dayton Duncan, and I create a film, our goal is to put people in that place – in that time when history is happening. A Tauck tour does that, too – you can be told the story of what happened and the story can come alive and the story can have greater meaning to you. And likewise, when we make a film we don’t settle for “OK.” We want that film to be excellent. And what strikes me about Tauck is that same insistence on excellence in everything they do. Lastly, we share a love for this great land of ours, and it is our hope that through this Civil War experience you are inspired to join us on future journeys we map out together. Just as each of my filmmaking experiences has inspired my journeys and adventures.

I look forward to speaking with you in person when I deliver my keynote address at the National Archives – a location that has been so pivotal to my research on the Civil War – and afterwards as we all take in the splendor of that place and what it means to our country.

Sincerely, Ken Burns
