Ken Burns sees Abraham Lincoln as the central figure of the conflict. An individual who represents the different perspectives and motivations of the nation and the personification of “The North.” Lincoln, who Ken Burns calls “a poet president” has a story that is not as one-dimensional as some versions of history make out. What makes this day truly interesting are the unexpected insights into Lincoln’s thinking and experience and what they say about the “higher conversation” to be had about the Civil War.

LINCOLN’S COTTAGE

Lincoln’s Cottage is on the outskirts of modern Washington, DC and was Lincoln’s “Camp David” where he spent his summer months escaping from the oppressive heat of Washington. It was here that Lincoln supposedly crafted the Emancipation Proclamation. We will be greeted by the museum’s director, treated to an exclusive tour of the cottage and hear stories of Lincoln’s time here.
