LIBRARY OF CONGRESS
The Library of Congress is the nation’s oldest federal cultural institution and serves as the research arm of Congress. It was also another of Ken Burns’s sources of research for his award-winning film series on the Civil War. One of the highlights of this visit will be a tour of the new Civil War Photo exhibit that will only be open through the summer of 2011. The exhibition features an exceptional collection of nearly 700 ambrotype and tintype photographs showing both Union and Confederate soldiers during the American Civil War. The collection comes to the Library of Congress courtesy of the Liljenquist family. Tom Liljenquist and his three sons — Jason, 19; Brandon, 17; and Christian, 13 — became interested in Civil War history after finding bullets and other signs of an encampment near their home in Virginia.
