FREDERICK DOUGLASS
HOUSE We will enjoy a Ranger-led tour of this Cedar Hill home, where the famed abolitionist spent his later life as an ambassador after growing up enslaved as a child in Maryland. Born into slavery, Douglass escaped to spend his life fighting for justice and equality for all people. His tireless struggle, transformative words, and inclusive vision of humanity continue to inspire and sustain people today.
U STREET WALKING TOUR
This is the area in which freed slaves settled and is home to the African American Civil War Memorial and Howard University. This neighborhood is particularly representative of the African American experience during, and as a result of, the Civil War. U Street has long been a center of Washington’s music scene, with the Lincoln Theatre, Howard Theatre, Bohemian Caverns, and other clubs and historic jazz venues.
