THE latest twist to plans for the UK's long-awaited high-speed rail network saw an alteration to the proposed route following protests about its potential impact on residential areas and the countryside. Transport secretary Philip Hammond said around half of the original proposed route between London and Birmingham had changed since it was published last March. “I am confident that solutions have now been found which can significantly mitigate the impacts of the railway at local level which will reassure many of those who have been understandably apprehensive about the potential impact on their lives and property,“ said Hammond. Meanwhile, the government announced in November that it will invest in more than 2,100 carriages for the UK's rail network by 2019 in a bid to modernise infrastructure,
