for at least the next 10 years, he will present on “Extending the Lifetime of 8” Fabs in Europe.” However, Campion cautions that to be
competitive requires getting strong support from suppliers. Good quality parts and support are essential. He says that this will be his third time at the Fab Manager Forum and that one session in particular will address this issue, “Cost- efficient long-term Equipment-Services,” with presentations from L Foundry, Texas Instruments, Tokyo Electron and X-Fab.
Campion is a champion for the Fab Managers Forum. He says, “No other platform exists for fab managers to discuss their critical issues. Not only is the forum a platform to discuss issues, participants follow up after the show is over to exchange information and learn. People doing the same job can work together, though sometimes it may be difficult because we are in competition. Nevertheless we can talk and it helps to strategize. Companies compete, but we also are competitors!” The issue of “coopetition” came up, and Campion agreed that to succeed, you need to cooperate in the morning and compete in the afternoon. “Identifying common problems that you can
address together is important for Europe,” Campion says. “For a stronger Europe, we need superior competencies. We are impatient, but we need to be patient and develop a meaningful level of cooperation in the fabs.”
Supplier perspective This year at SEMICON Europa, the theme of the 14th Fab Manager’s Forum will be “How to keep current FABs fit for purpose and most efficiently running”. Speakers from Europe’s leading semiconductor FABs will present their strategies and ideas about how they feel legacy FABs will adjust to remain competitive. One of the speakers, Eyal Shekel from Tokyo Electron, will explain what the Equipment Maker is doing to contribute to this effort. Eyal, vice president of Service for Tokyo Electron Europe, will provide details showing how Tokyo Electron has dramatically changed in order to meet the European industry’s shifting requirements. TEL will illustrate how the company has
changed in three areas; Certified Used Equipment, Modifications and After-market Solutions. Used Equipment, previously left to the brokers, now factors heavily into Tokyo Electron’s portfolio. Offering Certified Used Tools, Tokyo Electron endeavours to remove the risk that a
FAB Manager faces when purchasing from a broker. Offering warranty as standard, the tools can be customised to match the configuration required, removing risk and worry. He will also explain how TEL has been promoting a range of modifications to prolong used equipment competitiveness. Modifications aimed at improvement uptime, cost reduction or productivity are now available for a wide range of tools. Many have been re-engineered following successful implementation on 300mm tools. Finally, he will present successes that Tokyo Electron has had in offering packaged, after-market solutions. Emulating success achieved in other industries, Tokyo Electron now offers many new solutions, including extended warranty and benchmarking solutions to ensure their customers’ engineers are sufficiently skilled to maintain their tools.
A word from the sponsor MAX International Engineering Group is globally serving the Semiconductor, Solar, and Telecommunication industries. The company focus is on Factory (from front end Wafer Fabrication to backend Assembly & Test operations) performance and operational excellence. In all our projects they work hand in hand with factory personnel and managers to maximize resource effectiveness. In the last two years they have been contracted to manage Wafer Fabs for clients and actively manage two Fabs in both Europe and the US. They are not only sponsors of the Fab Managers Forum but also members. From our top management to our consultants on site, MAX I.E.G. are committed to work in synergy with your organization as one team zealously improving your bottom line. We will increase productivity, output, and shorten cycle times, thus reducing operational costs. The SEMI Fab Managers Forum brings together Fab, R&D and Supplier communities for highly interactive sessions, a good balance of user needs and supplier solutions. Other sessions cover Fab Automation and Control (with speakers from Altis Semiconductors, Bosch, GLOBALFOUNDRIES, Infineon, and Micron) and Line Capability Optimization & Introduction of Advanced Technologies (with Applied Materials, Numonyx, and STMicroelectronics). The Closing Panel will discuss “Fab Efficiency and Strategic Line Advancements” with panelists from Applied Materials, Nikon, Novellus, and X-Fab.
