RIPS Regatta

S

tart with painstaking planning, invite a few pirates with passion

and personality, add some primo race management and a plethora of prizes, pull it all together on Pender Island, British Columbia, what have you got? All the elements of a phenomenal regatta!

That’s exactly what RIPS Yachting

Ltd. and the Trustee organizers (Sue and Alex Foley and Lynn and David Sutherland) of RIPS Canadian Race Week 2010 delivered a few short weeks ago. Over 250 racers attended year six of the Racing In Plumper Sound regatta from August 14 to 18, adopting Port Browning Marina as their temporary home. The RIPS regatta, affectionately

referred to as “summer camp for adults,” welcomed attendees from as far away as Sylvan Lake, Alberta (thanks to Westport Marina for the launch/haul-out), Orcas Island (USA), Vancouver and Vancouver Island. A total of 43 boats, sporting UK- Halsey Sailmakers Northwest backstay pennants, basked in the scorching 80° plus temperatures, grateful for the abundance of water, courtesy of Tru Value Foods. Of course it goes without saying; the

pillar of any successful regatta is the race committee. These dedicated volunteers (from the Canadian Forces Sailing 48° NORTH, OCTOBER 2010 PAGE 38

International Race Officer, Paul Ulibarri (PU). Arguably, the finest of fine race management teams, these tenacious individuals executed 15 races on two distinct courses over five days, in spite of the challenging conditions. The committee members performed their tasks in comfort aboard the chase, photo and signal boats, generously provided by Cooper Boating, Bosuns Yacht Sales & Service and David Trace.
