the boom by getting a line through a backup webbing strop I had on the boom for just such an event. Inspect each component of the

mainsheet system. Deformed metal components should be replaced. Ask yourself: was that the right part for the job? Worn or corroded parts should also be considered for replacement, especially older stainless steel. Threaded shackle pins must be secured with wire, or at least a zip tie, although they do rot in the sun. While helping a friend on their catamaran in the Sea of Cortez last summer, I noticed that the mainsheet shackle pin had loosened to the point that only ½ thread turn remained.

Vang: The vang is a great tool for

controlling downwind sail shape and reducing the chances of an accidental gybe. A vang can be under huge loads when the breeze is up. Both Totem and the Seattle-based Capaz had minor vang problems. In both cases, the vangs were quickly jury rigged using Spectra line in place of broken stainless shackles. As with the mainsheet, inspect each vang component and especially the boom and mast attachment points. It’s not uncommon for the galvanic corrosion between the stainless steel fasteners and aluminum to cause the attachment point off of the boom and cause it to separate from the boom. The list of boom components

goes on: outhaul, preventer, reefing or furling gear, lazy jacks, etc. Inspection recommendations are similar for each. Check the metal bits for deformation, wear, and corrosion. Removing stainless steel fasteners from the boom and mast to coat the threads with Tef-Gel or Lanocote every couple years greatly reduces galvanic corrosion between the dissimilar metals. It’s also a good idea to occasionally lubricate sheaves, the gooseneck, and other moving parts with a dry silicone spray. Inspect lines for chafe, especially reef lines. Always be careful of reefing lines, lazy jack lines, etc. drooping down from the boom. Bad things can happen during a gybe or even just tacking. Often at anchor our children like to

play or read atop the furled mainsail. With sunsets and giggles it’s easy to forget about the silent boom until a windy day gybe scares the hell out of

you, or worse. In the 80’s I was in a regatta in Long Island Sound in which a crewmember on another boat was struck in the head by the boom during a routine gybe. He simply forgot to duck and it cost him his life. More recently, in April when a number of boats, including Totem, were in route to the French Polynesia, there was a near fatal tragedy aboard the Sequim based sloop Wind Child. During a gybe, the mid-boom mainsheet whipped across the cockpit and crumpled a poor fellow into a winch. After life saving resuscitation, a desperate mayday call

faintly picked up by a HAM operator in Florida, and a risky “at-sea” evacuation – the crewman survived. Spend a little time doing a boom

inspection. Have fun sailing, and don’t forget to duck.
