Lowtide
Hundreds of kids built boats, acted or watched the original nautical play at North Star Stage, created in the Kidz Cove, Fish Printing or participated in the Pirate Treasure Hunt during the festival. Photos by Jan Davis for WBF
the possibi itly of a motorboat race and model remote-control races during next years Festival. Educational presentations at
Boatyard Stage and Woodworking Stage got five stars, with great attendance under partly sunny skies. With the full use of NW Maritime Center, indoor presentations more than doubled this year with rooms filled to overflowing. Eighty-four faculty presenters in five indoor rooms gave tremendous opportunity for small group discussions and personal time with presenters. Education is a top priority, not only for the Wooden Boat Festival weekend, but year around for NW Maritime Center and Wooden Boat Foundation. Every corner of the marina,
every vantage point, demonstration stage, presentation room, kids area, waterfront dock and expanded exhibit area was filled with laughter, a spirit of optimism and sincere interest in whatever the people wanted to share: boats, music, new products, old tools, cutting edge chemistry, ancient techniques and travel - from Alaska to Greenland to the French Canals. We were all here to enjoy a beautiful Northwest weekend by the water, rain or shine, with wooden boats in a venue so familiar and now comfortably and significantly improved, with more ADA compatible spaces, new docks, upgraded facilities, downtown wireless and free year round access to the beaches. For a third consecutive year, the
number of boat applicants far exceeded space. Thanks to a visionary Port commission, staff and local marine trades community, conversations have begun to seriously explore ways to expand the festival earlier into the week, down to Boat Haven, and deeper cooperation between boat owners, marine trades, Port, historic vessels, regional non- profits and the staff at NW Maritime Center & Wooden Boat Foundation year round.
A dream 34 years in the making
has come true. Now, fully awake and full of vigor, a new phase has begun, refreshingly respectful of the original vision and engaging the next generation with education, travel, skill-building and business opportunities that have always blended successfully here even through storms.
Mark your calendars. Plan your
boating schedule. Reserve your room, friend's house or campsite for the 35th Wooden Boat Festival, September 9-11, 2011. Follow us on Facebook (Wooden Boat Foundation) and on the website,
www.woodenboat.org or better yet, stop by for coffee!
