ADVENTURE CRUISING

Petersburg – Little Norway Nestled in a quiet inlet on the north end of Mitkof Island, Petersburg started out as a summer fish camp for the Kate Tlingits. Near the town site you’ll find the remnants of ancient fish traps and some petroglyphs dating back to around 100AD. The waters around the island offer some of the finest halibut and salmon sport-fishing in South-East Alaska. The townsfolk still make their living from the sea and retain their strong Norwegian heritage. Each May, the community celebrates its Norwegian heritage with their Little Norway Festival. During the 3-day festival, townsfolk dress up as Vikings and host a parade, a

Scandinavian beauty pageant, costume shows and a traditional Kaffe Hus (Norwegian food, drink and music).

LeConte – The Shooting Glacier The 21-mile-long and one-mile-wide LeConte Glacier is the Northern Hemisphere’s southernmost tidewater glacier on the Pacific Ocean. The locals call it the “shooting glacier” because it calves icebergs underwater. Unlike most glaciers that calve bergs from above their waterline, most of the LeConte’s calving occurs below the waterline. The buoyant bergs break off the glacier’s 800ft-deep face and pop or “shoot” out of the water. Only small vessels can navigate the ice-clogged bay up to the glacier face. ASC guests can explore the icebergs by kayak or skiff and the guides usually bring back small chunks of the “ancient ice” for happy-hour cocktails.

And Finally… ASC has designed its Alaskan itineraries for adventurers with a driving desire to escape to unknown anchorages without sacrificing comfort. Their cruise philosophy affords guests a sophisticated blend of go-at-your- own-pace adventures, fun, fine food and education. So, if you’re planning to un-wind or un-plug on your next Alaskan adventure, maybe it’s time to sample an un-cruise. 
