Peter & Roger Cruise America!

World of Cruising contributor and cruise ‘insider’ Peter Rushton has teamed up with established cruise author Roger Cartwright to produce an enjoyable and insightful volume into the history of the US cruise business called Cruise America.

T

he glossy 100-page paperback charts the development of the US cruise industry from its 19th century roots to the mega-ships of today, with a beautifully illustrated and photographed series of essays like ‘Post-War Us Cruising,’ ‘the Onset of the Mega-Ships’ and ‘The Luxury Market.’ The well-versed duo – Cartwright an inter- national author and speaker, Rushton who sailed aboard the legendary Union-Castle line and then started his own company arranging lecture and enrichment programmes aboard ships – make for an entertaining as well as informative writing pair.

14 WORLD OF CRUISING I Autumn 2010

They present a classic story (despite its modern incarnation), that exhibits their long-standing understanding and love of travel by sea, and offer some priceless nuggets of information along the way, like the sad fate of the United States Lines ship America. They delve into the background of com- panies like Chandris Cruise Lines and the importance of the 1970s’ TV programme The Love Boat, and demonstrate their affection for the genre with a meticulous approach that is both biographical and contemporary. More importantly, it focuses in depth on

the way the business has grown, both in num- bers and the size of the ships, leading up to the advent of Royal Caribbean’s gigantic Oasis of the Seas, and all that she now represents to a new generation of cruise-goers.

It is a fascinating historic perspective and

modern work-in-progress, finishing with a cruise line by cruise line summary that is a handy reference guide. Their conclusion that this is “the most exciting, dynamic and even glamorous vacation business in the whole wide world” is also something we would whole-heartedly endorse here at World of Cruising magazine! ‘Cruise America – A History of the American Cruise Industry’ is published in the UK by The History Press at £19.99 and is available from www. thehistorypress.co.uk or from Amazon. com, or by calling The History Press on 01453 883300.
