PORT NEWS
DOLPHIN DELIGHT COSTA MAYA, one of Mexico’s largest cruise ports and emerging destinations, has partnered with the Dolphin Discovery company to offer interactive dol- phin encounters as a shore excursion from this winter. The dolphin experience facilities will also be located within the cruise terminal itself, providing maximum convenience for visiting passengers. Expert trainers will take participants through a complete explanation about dolphin anatomy, psychology, nature and their unique ways of com- municating and guests will be allowed to seal their connection to the sea-going mammals with a kiss. NO.1 FOR CRUISING
CHARLESTON OPENING
Port chiefs at the South Carolina port of CHARLES- TON are investigating the possibilities of opening a new cruise terminal within the next two years. According to a study commissioned by the au- thority, cruises this year will mean $37million to the local economy, with cruising supporting 400 jobs in the Charleston area. Carnival’s Fantasy was the first ship to use the port as a base earlier this year, and there will be a total of 67 cruise calls in 2010.
ALLIANCE GROWTH
The 17 member ports of the ATLANTIC ALLIANCE are expecting 1.75million passengers in the 2010 season, up 8 per cent from 2009. Lisbon tops the list as the Alliance port with the most passengers at 460,000, followed by Dover (325,977) and Vigo (230,000). Hamburg is currently expecting more than 100 total calls for the first time with a passenger volume in excess of 200,000. The member ports are also positive about future
growth, as Europe remains a central focus of the cruise industry. Michael Ungerer, senior VP for op- erations for AIDA Cruises, confirmed: “The Atlantic Alliance is a perfect example of how an innova- tive idea can be packaged and marketed as a new product. What could be more exciting than visiting these fantastic Western European capitals with a cruise ship?” The founding members of the Atlantic Alliance
are: Hamburg, Bremerhaven, Ijmuiden, Amster- dam, Rotterdam, Zeeland, Antwerp, Dover, Port- land, Cherbourg, Le Havre, Nantes, La Rochelle, Bordeaux, Santander, Vigo and Lisbon. More info: visit
