Culture

It’s stating the obvious that culture vultures flock in greatest numbers to Europe, and the likes of Rome, Athens, Barcelona, Istanbul, Venice, Dubrovnik and the French Riviera. ALL of these can also be accessed from many typical MEDITERRANEAN voyages. Indeed, a Med cruise can often encapsulate some of the greatest achievements of both modern and ancient civilisations, with lines like Voyages of Discovery, Swan Hellenic and Voyages to Antiquity set up for that specific purpose. And, while you may feel in need of another holiday on some schedules, which can be dangerously port-intensive, you won’t find another region that delivers such a cross-section of different

countries and cultural experiences in such relatively short travel time. On a slightly lesser scale, NORTHERN

EUROPE is a delight when it includes historic St Petersburg (where you should always look for a cruise that includes an overnight stay), dainty Copenhagen, surprising Gdansk, chic Oslo and either Rostock or Warnemunde, for shore excursion access to Berlin.

Don’t overlook the appeal in this area

of CANADA/NEW ENGLAND voyages that provide a wonderful cross-section of North American culture from the likes of Montreal, Quebec, Boston and New York. In fact, there may not be another cruise that includes four such memorable cities.

Wildlife

When it comes to those who put nature’s wildlife wonders top of their holiday shopping list, cruising again comes up trumps. Start with ALASKA, where the sights include some of the richest viewing on the planet, from killer and humpback whales to bears, moose and the amazing salmon run. CENTRAL AMERICA is another haven of opportunity, with Costa Rica, Belize and Honduras all offering a variety of jungle and tropical animals. SOUTH AMERICA is equally rewarding, and any cruise that voyages along the

Amazon or Orinoco rivers will include an immensity of wildlife watching that truly takes the breath away. The GALAPAGOS are a tableau of unequalled flora and fauna, while ANTARCTICA boasts nature extremes of all kinds. AFRICA is not served in the same depth by the cruise lines (for reasons both of security and geography, with long distances from port to port), but there are a handful of opportunities to visit Kenya, Tanzania, Madagascar and South Africa, and here the big game viewing is simply unparalleled.

The X-Factor

As a final thought on the ‘Where?’ of your selection, there are several itineraries that feature that something special, an extra element that is hard to define but undeniable in its appeal, cruising’s ‘X-factor,’ if you like. Top of this category would be HAWAII,

where the combination of volcanic and tropical locations, South Seas culture, laid- back style and classic beaches make for a truly outstanding experience. Similarly,

the scope and uniqueness of NORTHERN AUSTRALIA make for another journey into the distinctive and unforgettable. Finally, somewhere we lauded in Issue

47, CHILEAN PATAGONIA, will always be high on our list, a realm of unspoiled natural charms, wonderful people, extraordinary wildlife and truly enriching life experiences.

And for ALL of the above? Well, just take a World Cruise of course!
