NEW SHIP REVIEW

Sports are also a major feature of O’Sheehan’s bar and grill amidships on Deck 6. In the atrium is a two- deck-high screen for sports screening and passengers can also play darts, pool, table football and even in- dulge in 10-pin bowling in one of the three lanes here (another two can be found in the Bliss Ultra Lounge).

here are numerous bars but the Ice Bar on Deck 7 is unique. Inspired by the ice hotels in Scandinavia, it has a constant tempera- ture of -26°C and consists of sculptures, tables and chairs, all made from ice. Wearing special coats and gloves to keep warm (for the price of $20/ person), one can enjoy cocktails and a stay of 45 minutes in this atmospheric location. The 31,000sq ft Mandara Spa and fitness area

on Deck 14 is claimed to be the largest at sea and has multiple treatment rooms, plus 39 spa balcony- suites with private key-card access to the spa. On the top deck is the colourful Aqua Park with a multitude of activities for both adults and children. Not only is there a rock climbing wall, with the first ever abseiling wall at sea, there is the breathtaking Epic Plunge, where one can ride an inner-tube down a 200ft-long tube and bowl. Neither are for the faint-hearted! The Aqua Park also has two other large slides,

GO WITH THE FLOW

Moon dueling pianos group takes requests and improvises popular songs. Very funny, this show is laid back and most enjoyable. There is also the more intimate Fat Cats club further aft, where one can while away the night listening to live jazz, folk and blues music. For those who wish to party, there is a choice between the vibrant Bliss Ultra Lounge on Deck 7 and open-air Spice H2

0 aft on Deck 15. Both fea-

ture great DJs and non-stop music. During the day, Spice H2

0 is an adults-only beach-club style pool

and bar area with live sporting events broadcast on the huge LED screen.

Most of the public areas are on Decks 5 to 7 and, for such a large ship, the passenger flow is excellent, with only a few bottlenecks. There is a narrow well running fore and aft along the centre line giving an open feeling to the ship and enhancing the overall “buzz,” especially at night. Two of the decks

are also connected by escalators, which is highly unusual.

two main pools and a special area for children with amusing water features. On Deck 17 is a full-size basketball court and the Spiders Web, a 24-foot- high climbing cage. Since her introduction, Norwegian Epic has had

highly favourable reviews on both sides of the At- lantic. Despite being one of the largest cruise ships in the world, her layout is so well designed she cer- tainly does not have that mega-ship feel about her. If forward bookings are anything to go by, she is bound to be a great success and, like NCL’s iconic Norway 30 years ago, this sets a new standard for big-ship cruising. 
