MARK GAIL/THE WASHINGTON POST Friendship Collegiate’sMalcolm Crockett scores a touchdown to put his team ahead, 24 -20.
After falling behind late, DeMatha rallies to win
BY ALAN GOLDENBACH As Friendship Collegiate en-
joyed a 12-point lead on top- ranked DeMatha with less than eight minutes to play on Satur- day, the packed stands atMcNa- mara and the dozens of fans filling the track surrounding the football field all thought the same thing: Could this really happen? On the DeMatha sideline,
there was a different thought. “This is DeMatha,” senior
running back Jacob Siwicki said. “What do you expect from us?” Facing the possibility of its
first loss to a Washington-area team from outside of the Wash- ington Catholic Athletic Confer- ence in 15 years, the Stags ral- lied, getting two touchdown runs from Siwicki in a 61-second span to erase the deficit and come away with a 35-32 victory. As quickly as Friendship
erased an eight-point halftime deficit with 20 consecutive third-quarter points, DeMatha snatched the game right back in the fourth quarter. The Stags took a 20-12 lead on
Michael Branthover’s 49-yard field goal at the end of the first

half, but they lost starting run- ning back Delonte Morton to what DeMatha Coach Bill McGregor called a severe ankle sprain, which forced him from the field for X-rays. DeMatha could not move the
35 32
ball without its standout runner, amassing minus-2 yards com- bined on its first two second- half possessions. After the first, Friendship’s Antonio Huff re- turned a punt 47 yards to the DeMatha 13, and Malcolm Crockett scored on the next play to make it 20-18. DeMatha’s next punt set up
Friendship at its own 38. Crock- ett burst up the middle on first down for a 62-yard touchdown to give the Knights their first lead. The two-point conversion on a pass from Percy Goings to Larenzo Fisher made it 26-20. DeMatha’s next drive ended
with a blocked 35-yard field goal, and Friendship drove 80 yards in eight plays, capped by a 25-yard pass from Goings to Huff on a post pattern that put him 10 yards from the nearest Stag. The two-point conversion
failed, and Friendship led 32-20 with two minutes to go in the third quarter. “In the third quarter,” De-
Matha senior quarterback Niko- lay Uherek said, “we all sawthat it was their game.” DeMatha drove downfield,
but on first-and-goal, fumbled at the Friendship 4, which the Knights’ DevinMayo recovered. But Friendship couldn’t ad- vance, had to punt from its end zone and set up DeMatha at the Knights’ 18. Siwicki took the handoff up
the middle untouched for a touchdown. It was 32-27 with 7:49 left. On the second play of Friend-
ship’s next possession, Michael F. Williams stripped a Knights running back at the 24-yard line, and Ta’Von Bailey returned it to the 6. Siwicki scored on the next play, stretching the ball across the goal line with 6:48 to play. Uherek hit Siwicki on a play-ac- tion pass for the two-point con- version to close the scoring. “You expect some mistakes,”
Friendship Coach Aazaar Abdul- Rahim said, “but you just hope they don’t happen at critical times. We know we’re close. We’re a great team.”

Chase has a plan, runswith it Bruins sophomore
uses fluid effort towin Monroe Parker event
BY CARL LITTLE Lake Braddock Coach Mike
Mangan was careful last year about what he would say to Sophie Chase. She was too young to be so good — the All-Met led the Bruins to the Virginia AAA state champion- ship by finishing third overall and then won the indoor state title in the 3,200 meters as a freshman — but he didn’t want her knowing that. This past summer, though,
Mangan decided it was time to talk. He sat Chase down and explained that her brash pedal- to-the-metal style wasn’t going to cut it for long. Sure, she’d get by in the state. But if she wanted to make herself an elite racer nationally, she would have to blend her speed and athleticism with strategy. Chase showed on Saturday
that she is a quick study, win- ning the Monroe Parker Invita- tional in 17 minutes 32 seconds. The sophomore produced her most dominating result to date on the 2.98-mile course at Burke LakePark inFairfax Station, and she didn’t have to gun it. She did it through a fluid, smart racing plan. “I wanted to start out new
again and run with more brains instead of putting it all out there at the beginning,” Chase said. “I’ve got a little more experience so I’m learning when to hold back and when to push.” Edison senior Myah Hicks

JOEL RICHARDSON FOR THE WASHINGTON POST
Chantilly sophomore SeanMcGorty, above, outlasted Lake Braddock’s SamRubenking to win the boys’ race by nine seconds.
was runner-up in 18:04. The girls from Jefferson were
held back last year because of a litany of injuries to their top runners, but they pushed their way to a convincing team win on Saturday. Senior Lisa Junta, who was third overall in 18:12, led the Colonials to victory over West Potomac, Lake Braddock and Langley. In the boys’ meet, West Poto-
macdid not placearunnerin the top 10, but rode a very tight pack to a big win over South Lakes, Lake Braddock and Jefferson. Just 23 seconds separated the Wolverines’ top scorer, senior Benjamin Aleixo, from its fifth, sophomore Marc Lotterie. Aleixo finished 11th and Lotterie was 23rd. Chantilly sophomore Sean
McGorty was the individual champion in 15:17, finishing ahead of Lake Braddock senior Sam Rubenking (15:26) and An- nandale junior Ahmed Bile (15:28).
It was clear early on who
would win the girls’ race, but McGorty andRubenking battled all the way into the home stretch. With about 400 meters remaining, as the duo emerged from the trees, Rubenking was running onMcGorty’s heels. But McGorty summoned a final burst up the final hill and Rubenking had no answer. McGorty won the freshman
race atMonroe Parker last year, but has had very little experi- ence racing at the front of varsity packs. He still managed to deliv- er. It was the third straight year that aChantillyboywonMonroe Parker. “I’m glad I was able to carry
on the tradition,” McGorty said. “I started to get my groove and just kept on kicking.”
