She was the loving wife of John Franklin Hoffman who preceded her in death in 2005 after 62 years of marriage.
Born on April 17, 1921 she was the daughter of the late Edward Louis Piper and Mary Ann Piper (nee Burns) of Punxsutawney, PA. She grew up in Punxsutawney and lived most of her adult life in Verona, PA, near Pittsburgh. After retirement, she lived in Englewood, FL and Fairfax Station,VA.
She is survived by her daughter, Linda Hoffman Mink, her son-in-law,Thomas, her granddaugh- ters, Melissa E. Huallpa and Jennifer J. Mink; two sons-in-laws and four great-grandchildren, Jack, Joey, Luke and Amanda.
She will be interred in a private ceremony and laid to rest next to her beloved husband at Fairfax Memorial Park, Fairfax,VA.

Born May 23, 1944, entered eternal life Sep- tember 1, 2010, after several hard and difficult years combating chronic leukemia and prostate cancer. Mr. Ramsey was born in San Antonio, Texas and raised in Detroit, Michigan. He had a distinguished career in the nuclear industry working at the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and at the U.S. Department of Energy. Charles enjoyed a combined Federal Service of twenty-six years and a Vietnam Veteran honorable discharge from the U.S. Air Force. He was an industry subject matter expert, known internationally as an author, guest speaker and a nuclear safety expert. He leaves to mourn two sons, Marc H. Ramsey and Ryan K. Ramsey; daughter-in-law, Charise; two grandsons, Ryan and Xavier; one grand- daughter, Nyiah; an aunt, Modenia Cooley; a devoted companion, Jessica Barbalho and a host of family, friends and co-workers. A celebration of Mr. Ramsey’s life is being planned and his ashes will be laid to rest at Arlington Cemetery at a later date.

On Thursday, September 9, 2010, FLORENCE STEED, formerly of Coronado, California and a resident of Chevy Chase, Maryland peacefully passed away. She is preceded in death by her husband Bob who died in 2002.
Florence was born in Menasha, Wisconsin on July 4, 1915. She graduated as a Register Nurse from Marquette University College of Nursing just after her 21st Birthday in 1936. She married Robert Steed in 1940 and their marriage lasted for 62 years.
Florence was a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother. She was an energetic and hard worker who loved nursing and music.
Mrs. Steed is survived by her two sons, Michael and Jeffery; her daughter-in-law, Carol; her three grandsons, Christopher, Jeremy and Tyler' and her nephew, John R. Killa.

Died at St. Francis Hospital-Park on Sep- tember 7, 2010. Margaret was born in the Philippines to Colonel Robert Tuthill Gants, U.S. Army surgeon and Frances Anna Langmade in 1939. She grew up in a loving family and was stationed across Asia, Europe and the United States. As an infant, she was evacuated during WWII to Shanghai and then to the U.S. Margaret was present with her family in Europe at the end of WWII, during the liberation. Her father, Colonel Robert Gants, was the last mounted surgeon during WWII who subsequently operated on President Dwight Eisenhower.Upon her return to the United States, she finished her schooling, attending MountVernon College. Margaret then spent 19 years raising her two daugh- ters in the U.S., Africa, Taiwan and Hong Kong. She was fluent in Mandarin Chinese. She earned her Bachelor of Arts, Magna cum Laude from Georgetown University and Master of Arts in Chinese History with Honors from Hong Kong University. After her return to the United States, she was employed at the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Margaret was politically active and aided as a volunteer in the political campaigns of the Bush Presiden- cies. Recently of Tallahassee, Florida, Mar- garet was a Master Gardener and avid Tai Chi enthusiast. She leaves two daughters, Cynthia Wingfield and her husband,Wade of Olive Branch, MS and Mary Virginia Couch and her husband, Steve of Talla- hassee, FL; one brother, Robert M. Gants Esq. and his wife, Norma of Alexandria, VA; six grandchildren, Lauren Belisle and her husband, Joe, Andrew Green, Aaron DeShazo and his wife, Christina, Adam DeShazo, Amanda Anderson and her hus- band, John David, Alexis Wingfield and five great-grandchildren. Services will be held in Arlington, VA at a later date. Memorials may be sent to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Kathleen Mulvihill Conques, of Fairfax, Vir- ginia. She is also survived by 13 grandchil- dren, 14 great-grandchildren, and numerous other relatives and close friends. She was a kind person who was loved by all who knew her.
Irene was a 1939 National Honor Society graduate of Central High School in Muskogee, Oklahoma, and became the principal’s sec- retary. She married in 1942 and began an adventure across America and Europe. She was at the July 4, 1951, ceremony in St. Paul’s Cathedral in London attended by the Queen of England and General Dwight D. Eisenhower. Later in life she became a successful real estate agent in Fairfax. Her Mount Vernon Realty photograph is seen above. She was a devout Baptist and loved her family, placing both before herself. For the past two years, she resided at the Silver Tree Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Schertz, where she enjoyed being close to family, renewing friendship with her former spouse (also a resident), and making many new friends. She was looking forward to her 90th birthday this month and attending the wedding of her granddaughter, Colette Dugas Conques, in October, an occasion to be attended by all her descendants. Sadly, her weak heart could not take her any further. She is now in Heaven.

ZAIC SHANNON
Of Bridgeville, DE passed away at his residence on September 2, 2010, after battling lung cancer for 16 months.
HAROLDANTHONY SHANNON (Age 82)
He was born in New Rochelle, NY, son the late Hugh J. and Mary A. (Fredericks) Shannon. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret Lena Bliault and daughter Sandra.
Harry served his country proudly in the US Navy and retired after 23 years as a Chief Warrant Officer (W-3). After his naval career, he worked for Vitro Labs and General Dynamics.
He loved to play golf and travel, was adventure- some, loving and wonderful to his wife above all else. He loved to be with people and his Navy stories will be remembered by all who were fortunate to have known him.
He is survived by his wife Elvie Hill, sons Michael and Dennis Shannon, daughter Patricia Benson, seven grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and a sister, Mary Ann Devine.

Management in 1975. He transferred to the General Services Administration in 1977 and retired as an Assistant Commissioner of GSA’s Federal Supply Service in 2000. During his career, he specialized in service contracting, including financial management services, and was noted for ground breaking government-wide contracts for travel services, debt collection services, and the institution of Federal government credit cards. His many awards and commendations include two for improvements to Federal financial management.
ALLAN J. ZAIC
Allan J. Zaic, 63, who was a 12-year survivor of metastatic lung cancer, died on September 9, 2010, of complications of heart surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD. He lived in Gettysburg, PA and had been a long time resident of Olney and Silver Spring, MD.
Mr. Zaic was born in Long Island City, NY on January 12, 1947 to the late John J. and Mary Kelley Zaic. He graduated from Cathedral High School in Brooklyn, NY and received both his B.S. degree, in history and political science in1978, and his MSA degree, in management in1980, from George Washington University.
He served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam and started his full-time Federal career as a legal clerk at the Eastern States Office of the Bureau of Land
He is survived by his beloved wife of 32 years, Elizabeth M. (Liz) Zaic; his daughter, Julia M. Gilroy (Drew); his grandson, Nicholas J. Brian; his granddaughter, Samantha M. Gilroy; two sisters, Ann H. St. Clair and Catherine M. Zaic (Larry Graves); three brothers, John J. Zaic (Susan), Jerome E. Zaic (Catherine), and Daniel F. Zaic; and two brothers-in-law, William C. Karageanis (June) and Michael C. Karageanis (Barbara). He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and his best friends, John H. Harms and Lyle Rishell (Marilyn).
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother Brian J. Zaic, and his sister-in-law, Bernadette Zaic.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, September 14, 2010, at St. Francis Xavier Church, 22W. High St., Gettysburg, PA.
