Mary Louise Hoppe, 87, of Woodbridge, passed away August 10, 2010. She was a Contracting Officer with the FAA until she retired in 1986. She was a veteran of the SPARS (Women’s Coast Guard,WWII) and a lifetime member of the DAV. She was the widow of John Thomas Hoppe, Jr., (also a disabled veteran,) and the daughter of Purvis Abraham “Pearl” Stafford and Carrie Mae Cook Stafford of East Texas. Her siblings, Preston, Joyce, Sidney, Parker, Gilbert, Anne and Jane, called her “Sister,” in the same way you call your mother “Mom.” She loved and took care of them all while Pearl and Carrie were working in the fields. She is survived by her two sons, Mark and James E. A green-eyed country girl, she was full of vinegar and… the other stuff. Fear, and even common sense, was discarded if she perceived injustice. She was fiercely protective, but would not abide meanness or deception from her own. She had no use for sadness; therefore, we won’t be sad now. She loved her life and each of us in it. Her wont was to “accentuate the positive.” Her laughter came in peals, pure and natural as a waterfall. Her smile would shame the sun. Her like will not be seen again. Amen. (Ma, we loved you mightily, too.) A gravesite service will be held at National Memorial Park in Falls Church on Tuesday, September 14, at 11:30 a.m. Mountcastle Turch Life Celebration Home, 13318 Occoquan Road, Woodbridge is in charge of arrangements.
