STYC Single-Handed Race Area L, which includes Washington,

The Sloop Tavern Yacht Club’s Single-Handed Race was held this year on Saturday, August 14. A beautiful, warm, breezy day and a solid field of 11 boats helped make this another great event! This race is one of several shorthanded races that STYC provides each year – and it is particularly unique with its reverse start pursuit-style format. The first single-handed skipper to cross the finish line wins! Good breeze allowed the fleet to sail the long course to Spring Beach, West Point, and back to Shilshole. STYC Race Chair Dan Randolph and member Tony Devita coordinated the race from Dan’s Farr 30 Nefarious. Finishing first was Kirk Fraser in

his Yankee 30 Moonshine, followed by Edward Schulman in his J/100 BJ, and Kevin Swackhammer in his Santana 20 Hitched. As always the event was concluded with a good time and awards at the Sloop Tavern. Complete results can be found at: www.styc.org

Ripple Opti Clinic August 9, 10 & 11 saw a gathering

Brian Watkins (above) and Ben Glass

(below) have met all the qualifications for US SAILING Club Race Officer status and have been awarded that title. Their certification is for a four-year term. Becoming a Club Race Officer means that they are qualified to run any race normally conducted at their local sailing organization, including organizing the race committee, writing correct sailing instructions, and doing the scoring.

of youngsters in the Optimist Class participating in the annual Ripple Clinic, the brainchild of P.I.Y.A. with International coaches Argy Resano, Manny Resano and Nico Winograd imparting their years of experience and wisdom to the sailors of the Red, White and Blue fleets. The newest in the world of Opti sailing, the Green Fleet youngsters were treated to Tom the Opti Guy from McLaughlin. It was a picture perfect venue, the weather and water were warm and the wind blew as only The Gorge can do. The learning curve was at its highest for these young sailors, all in preparation for what was to follow, the Pacific Coast Championships on Saturday and Sunday of that week. Friday our lay day, we planned some hiking, but it seemed that these youngsters just wanted to sleep in and then enjoy the beauty of the area. Dock and beach coordinators

Andrew Cannard and McKenna Sullenger kept things humming and solving the daily problems of chase boats who can always have a bad day now and then. McKenna’s knowledge of the waters adjacent to the beach was invaluable to Tom, it always great to have someone with local knowledge to assist the newest coach in the Ripple group. It was a great week for everyone, including dinners at the park, lunches provided by the Cascade Lock Boosters for youth sailing. Many thanks to all who helped and contributed to the success of the event, Seattle Yacht Club’s Laurian Toland along with a host of other folks with a heartfelt desire to make this a great event for the youngsters. by Jan Visser, Area Director P.I.Y.A.
