panamax bulkers are still being converted to BV class at Sedef and will be delivered later this year. Each vessel is fitted with MAN Diesel dual-fuel engines
and generators capable of running on either heavy fuel or natural gas. Te first vessel has a 144MW generation capacity and the two following will be rated between 180 and 220MW. Te BV service notation was assigned as Special Service - Power Plant.
UK Swansea picks up
business Following the successful use of Swansea Dry Docks for the refit and refurbishment of the cruise ship, Saga Pearl II, the yard has recently been working on more vessels, including the ferry Julia, now plying the Fastnet Cork-Swansea overnight route, and emergency repair work on the 65m hopper dredger Heron and UKD Dredging’s Dolphin. Encouraged by the interest being shown, the Harris Pye
Group (HPG) has signed a longer lease on Swansea’s Duke of Edinburgh and Prince of Wales dry docks. According to Harris Pye, managing director, Mark Prendergast: “We invested heavily to revitalise the dry docks and are firmly committed to ongoing investment in them to enhance the existing facility and continually improve the service to clients.” Te Saga Pearl II project was in the dry dock from
mid-September 2009 until the first week in March 2010. Working on Julia and doing emergency work on the Heron showed different ‘quick turn round’ aspects of its capability, Harris Pye suggests. Dolphin was the first project completed under the new
lease agreement. UK Dredging did have a problem with severe vibration around the aſt end of the vessel, and there were concerns that the propeller blades were damaged. It
was found that the four propeller blades on the starboard side were severely bent and consequently the owners supplied new blades which were then changed out. With the vessel in the dry dock the opportunity was taken to carry out some other work and the crosshead linkages for opening/closing six of the hopper doors were repaired; the dredge pipe flexible gamble was replaced; the dredge pump was opened up by members of the ship’s staff and internal welding repairs were carried out by our team; the leaking dredge valves were opened up and debris removed from the sealing area; and the entire hull was scraped of barnacles and high pressure washed. Swansea’s two dry docks can cater for vessels of a
variety of sizes and duration of stay. At 204m overall length, the Duke of Edinburgh Dock is the larger of the two, with a clear width at the entrance of 28m, a clear width between the dock walls of 30.4m, and a draught over the blocks of 6.5m. Te Prince of Wales Dock is 172m in overall dock length with clear width at the entrance of 22.26m and draught over blocks of 7m, and so is marginally deeper than the Duke of Edinburgh Dock.
Portugal Lisnave prepares oil
skimmer vessel Te BP oil disaster in the Gulf has been headline news across the world, and recently the Portuguese yard Lisnave played its part in trying to stop the oil spill. Lisnave carried out adaptation works on 320,000dwt ore Ore/Oil Carrier, A Whale, owned by Taiwanese interests. The vessel was moored alongside at Lisnave for a
ten day period in June, for various structural works to equip the ship to operate as a giant skimmer, to LR class specifications, before sailing to the Gulf of Mexico.
