UMC takes advantage of group synergies
Part of the VShip group, UK-based UMC International is looking at ways of strengthening its international market position by working in partnership with a sister company.
U
nderwater repair specialist UMC’s stated aim is to develop a global and comprehensive afloat maintenance
service for its shipping company customers that is both flexible and affordable. According to managing director, Alan Trevarthen: “Tis means providing support as close to the customer’s point of need as possible, with as much local UMC-controlled content as possible. Tat way we can keep costs down while continuing to ensure our reputation for quality.” To this end, during the last six months
UMC has been working much closer with sister company SeaTec Engineering to
harness its expertise in areas such as naval architecture, ship design and repair, safety and risk management.
SeaTec also has
operational bases in Europe, the Middle East and Asia which complement UMC’s own underwater engineering network. Mr Trevarthen points out: “Working
with SeaTec means we can take on more substantial afloat maintenance tasks, which extend above and below the water, and tackle larger turnkey projects. Staff from UMC and SeaTec can work together as a single team with expertise and project management being drawn from either company as best suits the task and the customer’s needs.”
UMC strengthens its business by working in partnership. Joint projects to date have included the
design and fabrication of cofferdams to support offshore FPSO underwater hull repairs in Europe and Canada and the design of a variable buoyancy pontoon system that allows wooden hulled platforms in South East Asia to be repaired dry and afloat. Complementing the developments with
SeaTec, UMC has continued to extend and strengthen its global network of approved diving partners. Over the first half of 2010, this expansion has allowed the company to deliver a range of services - including hull cleaning, hull plate replacement, and rudder, thruster and propeller repairs and
