Malta Palumbo takes


over Malta yard An official ceremony transferring ownership of Malta Shipyards’ drydocks and associated facilities to the Italian Palumbo group took place on 3 June this year in Valetta. Tis event was attended by the group managing director, Antonio Palumbo, as well as the Maltese minister of finance, economy and investment, Tonio Fenech and Italian ambassador to Malta, Paolo Andrea Trabalza.


Te company plans to bring the yard back into operation in phases and to ‘restore its international credibility.’


Dubai Drydocks World


completes repairs Drydocks World Dubai has completed a major repair job for a German ship owner, involving a container vessel extensively damaged by Somali pirates earlier this year. Te work, on the 925TEU ship Taipan, required the repair of almost 300 bullet holes and cabling in 80 spots along the 140m length of the ship, by a process of fairing and building up, then grinding flush from both sides. Smashed tempered window glass was fully replaced,


including 18 full panels in the wheelhouse, while bulkheads and parts of the ceiling and doors were renewed following the pirate attack. Te vessel was also fitted with anti-piracy razor wire at the instruction of the owner. Te repairs were carried out by Drydocks World’s

BV’s classy power


vessel conversion International classification society Bureau Veritas (BV) has been chosen to class a series of floating dual fuel power generation units, that are being converted from existing bulk carriers, and which will function as self-propelled portable power stations. Tese can run on heavy fuel or gas and plug into national grids where required. Te conversion is being designed and financed by


Turkish energy company Karadeniz Powership and the work is being carried out at the Sedef Yard in Tuzla, just outside Istanbul. Te first of this series of three vessels has in fact recently been delivered and is now in service in the Middle East Gulf. Two more ‘powerships’ based on

the government of Malta a total of €18 million over a 10 year period, as well as an annual payment of €1.66 million. Te deal further provides that Palumbo will invest more than €20 million in the shipyard over the next five years. Te total area being transferred is around 220,000m2


and


will include four drydocks, the largest measuring 360m x 62m, as well as 2000m of quay for alongside projects. Palumbo hopes to see an early resumption of activity at the Malta Shipyards site, which has been idle since 2009.
