main and auxiliary boiler sets in-house.” Harris Pye is also in the process of setting up branch


offices and, where necessary, workshop facilities, in a number of other locations in the Middle East in partnership with local companies. This includes facilities at the new Oman Drydock Company facility in Duqm, Oman, which is a joint operation between Daewoo (DSME) of Korea and the Omani government and which is due to commence operations in December 2010. In Abu Dhabi a facility to service marine and land-based


companies operating in the Emirate is being established and should be finalised during the last quarter of this year, while Harris Pye is also setting up a boiler maintenance and repair venture in Qatar in conjunction with Qatar Navigation. This will support the dry dock being built in the country by Keppel and should also be finalised during the last quarter of the year. The workshop facilities are already in place, Harris Pye notes. Through its Dubai operaton, Harris Pye has recently


completed a number of contracts for Qatar Gas, involving LNG tankers, where the main propulsion boilers have had their superheaters upgraded with more sophisticated materials. All contracts have been completed on time and this success has helped the group secure a similar contract from NGSCO, which is the Abu Dhabi government-owned LNG transportation company. The contract involves upgrading eight superheater assemblies, comprising two units on each of four sister ships. To support global boiler maintenance and repair


activities, Harris Pye now has its own in-house thermal design department, located in Sydney, Australia. “This new department services all group companies and enables them to offer a ‘one stop’ solution for all our customers where there is any degree of design, re-design or other stress/ strength calculations involved,” said Mr Prendegast. Harris Pye is generally upbeat about prospects in this


segment of the market. Mr Prendegast reports: “Compared to last year there is a definite increase in both the enquiries and contracts won for marine boiler repairs and refurbishment, which includes both main propulsion and auxiliary boiler installations.” He continues: “In the Middle East region especially, there


is a definite recovery in this respect, mainly due to the fact that necessary boiler repairs on operating ships can only be deferred for so long before they have to be addressed, irrespective of prevailing economic conditions. This holds true for other essential marine equipment installed on any ship, not just steam plant.” Harris Pye notes that that they have received a


substant ial ly increased number of enquiries for economiser refurbishment in recent months. This is due to a combination of incorrect operation and bringing ships back into active service after lay-up, where boilers and economisers were not correctly secured, or preserved for the duration of the lay-up.
