Goltens looks to South East Asia for recruitment Newly established Goltens Philippines targets specialist workforce development.

G

oltens, one of the world’s leading independent ship repair companies, has established a new

representative office in the Philippines. Tis is the first step in an ambitious development plan to attract more young people to a marine engineering and technical career. According to Paul Friedberg, president,

Goltens Worldwide Services: “Te current skills shortage is being felt across the shipping industry. Training a younger generation is paramount to meeting the needs of the ship repair industry and enabling us to retain our leading position as a specialist, independent shiprepair company.” The company has been assessing the

possibility of training young engineers and technicians in the Philippines for

the past 24 months. “Te opening of the Philippines office is the starting phase of a planned worldwide deployment of skilled Filipinos within the Goltens Group and the development of a future specialist workforce pool for our 22 offices and repair stations around the world,” says Mr Friedberg. During the past five years, Goltens has

established seven new global repair centres, liſting its annual ship repair revenue from US$90 million in 2005 to approximately US$200 million in 2010. Tough feeling the financial crunch in 2010, the company sees a growing demand for specialist repair and maintenance services amongst shipowners and ship managers. In particular the company believes that the ongoing increase in the size of

the world merchant fleet size calls for enhanced infrastructure and manpower to carry out regular maintenance, service and repairs. “With the additions to our global network of companies, such as the Goltens Philippines office, we are continually strengthening our capabilities and service reach around the world,” comments Mr Friedberg. Established as a division of Goltens

Singapore (GSPL), Goltens Philippines will service local customers, represent the Goltens Group, and aim to boost sales in the region. In addition, Goltens recently signed a recruitment agreement with a company called OSM People in the Philippines, whereby OSM will act as the exclusive recruitment partner for Philippine labour for the entire group.
