editorial the RJ-45 Barrier! Need for speed

infrastructure industry perhaps none so important as the recent approval of the IEEE P802.3ba standard for 40 and 100 Gigabit Ethernet. Ratified in June, the new standard is the culmination of nearly three years of effort by the IEEE P802.3ba Ethernet Task Force and provides a significant speed boost for Ethernet. Incorporating both speeds in one standard, the ratification is justified by ever increasing demands for bandwidth and the desire for networks that can handle levels of traffic well into the future. The reason given for the two speeds is that the two

areas of application have different growth rates and wouldn’t be properly serviced by one rate. At a very early stage in the process the decision had been made to choose the 100 Gigabit Ethernet rate but those involved with the server industry pointed out that this rate didn’t address the needs of their markets. Server bandwidth requirements are recognised to double every 24 months while core networking bandwidth needs double every 18 months. The 40 Gigabit Ethernet rate is intended to address

server and computing applications and the 100 Gigabit Ethernet rate is for aggregation and core networking applications. While the standard itself may have only just been

rubber stamped many industry vendors have been scrabbling to produce products and solutions to meet expected demand and 100Gb/s Ethernet routers, cards, and switches have all been developed. We can only guess at how quickly this high end technology will be adopted by organisations at a time of such economic uncertainty but many of the larger multinational companies out there have already expressed a great deal of interest. It will surely be some time before we start to witness

regular uptake of the new technology but in an industry that refuses to stand still how long will it be before we are talking about Terabit Ethernet?
