Marco has supplied over 1,000m of Category 6 trunking to be used as part of a large scale refurbishment scheme at Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor. The college for further education, with sites across North
West Wales, is refurbishing and upgrading a two storey building, formerly used as a land studies department, and transforming it into student accommodation, comprising 34 rooms with en-suite facilities. The main contractor at the project is ISG and the M&E contractor is Gwynedd-based, Falconer Electrical, to whom Marco is supplying uPVC trunking via a distributor. Lancashire hotspot
Powerworks has provided an increase in the UPS power provision in the University of Central Lancashire’s main data centre. On arrival in post as the new head of IT
infrastructure management, one of the initial tasks facing Graham J Lee was the need for an increase in the UPS power provision for the university’s main data centre. This was required to meet business growth plans. Power provision in the data centre
was reaching its limit and Powerworks was required to design, specify, install and maintain a new and increased UPS capacity, as well as ensuring the efficiency benefits provided by the latest generation of UPS equipment. Powerworks considered all elements
from the mains supply through to the air conditioning and corrected an existing problem by introducing sequential starting for the generator set. The lead engineer and project manager worked with all departments at the university to ensure the installation of two, 200KVA UPS units, including all new switching and cabling, was achieved with minimal down time.
Southwark and uses a selection of Extreme Networks’ Summit family of X350 and X450 switches. It supports more than 1,000 desktop computers and 250 laptops distributed throughout the Learning Resources Centres, classrooms, staff rooms, and student areas. Southwark College is now benefiting
from a faster and more reliable network, hosting various applications more efficiently with less downtime and fewer loopback issues. It is also enjoying the benefits of wireless networking, giving staff and students the ability to access applications and services on mobile devices both in and around the campus. With a solid foundation of Extreme Networks technology in place the college is now working with Express Commerce to migrate to a virtual infrastructure.

Brand-Rex has announced that Dimension Data has been awarded the contract to supply and install a Brand-Rex high speed data and communications infrastructure for Westfield’s new £1.45bn Olympic Shopping Centre development, Westfield Stratford City. The prestigious gateway to the London 2012 Olympics, the 1.9 million square foot development will be Europe’s largest urban shopping mall. Westfield Stratford City project is the fifth major Olympics related structured cabling project that Brand-Rex has won. Underpinning the infrastructure is a primary and secondary optical fibre structured cabling backbone that connects every telecommunications room to the primary equipment rooms, as well as linking in external services from telecoms providers, mobile carriers and satellite equipment. The Brand-Rex air blown fibre solution Blolite+ was chosen specifically for the project due to its flexibility and scalability, allowing additional connectivity for further services and devices in the future without disruption. Brand-Rex 10GPlus Category 6a structured cabling will be used together with the Blolite+
fibre optic backbones to deliver the fixed infrastructure to the whole of the shopping complex and commercial areas. In addition, the Brand-Rex infrastructure will support a 700 access node wireless network giving public access within the shopping complex.
