I recently left a nonprofit group to


pursue another job. About a month before I left, another employee left after spending many years there. We have recently found out that e-mails are still going out from that company using our specific work e-mail addresses, with our names in them. The other employee ran into a customer who said she didn’t realize the employee was no longer at this company because she was still getting e-mails from her e-mail account. Is there any recourse for this? It looks as if we are still working for this company. I had put an “away” message on my e-mail stating that I was leaving the company effective Nov. 10 and asking people to contact the executive director instead. I was told to take this message off before I left, and I set my e-mail to be forwarded to the executive director’s account. Any insight into this would be very helpful. I have not e-mailed the executive director since my departure, but I would like some strong wording or legalese that I can send his way.


Your former employer’s arrangement whereby e-mail messages sent to the account established in your name are forwarded to the executive director is not unusual. After all, your assigned work e-mail address belongs to your former employer, which is within its rights to do what it must to ensure the continuity of business operations upon your departure. Rather than simply disabling the e-mail account of a departing employee and risking the loss of important communications from customers and clients, many employers arrange for the routing of such e-mails to the account of a supervisor, usually directly to an e-mail folder reserved for that purpose. Many employers also opt to maintain an auto-responder on the account to inform any sender that the


recipient of the message has departed and the identity of the person who will be managing their queries in the future. It is certainly unsettling to learn that you are being impersonated in e-mail communications. And it is wholly unprofessional and inappropriate for your former employer to do so. However, my suspicion is that you are dealing with a case of technological incompetence rather than malicious intent. I am betting that the executive director of your former organization is responding to the messages delivered to his e-mail inbox without realizing that they were intended for you and that something about the way this arrangement was established by the IT department is causing responses to appear as if they are coming from your account.


Regardless, your question is about


what you can do to stop this from happening. Unless the e-mail messages going out under your name are in some way defamatory to your reputation, or sent with the intent to injure you or

defraud you of a benefit, I do not think that you have legal recourse. If your objective is to persuade your former employer to stop sending e-mails from an account bearing your name, then you probably will have the greatest success by writing a direct, yet polite, letter to the executive director with a copy to the employee in charge of information technology. State that you have become aware through customers of the organization that e-mail communications are still being sent from the account that was formerly assigned to you, resulting in much confusion. Explain that you are bringing this to the attention of the organization because you assume that this has happened in error and that they would never intentionally misrepresent the identity of the person originating a message to a customer. As them to please disable the account or,


alternatively, ensure that no messages are sent from it. In the meantime, if you have not done so already, you should write to the customers and clients you served during your tenure at your former job. Send them a friendly note to let them know that you have moved on and how they may reach you in the future. If you are a member of LinkedIn or some other professional online networking service, update your online résumé and send invitations to the key contacts you established in the course of your previous job. This will serve the dual purpose of ensuring that they understand that you are not the author of any messages sent from your former e-mail account and also expanding the reach of your professional network.

Political affiliations? I am an ag- ing boomer who recently received a security clearance. Previously, I thought there was no chance I would be given a clearance because I was opposed to the Vietnam War and sup- ported George McGovern for presi- dent. I was pleased to discover that being a Democrat is not regarded as a security risk. How did I get those beliefs? My whole life, Republican politicians have always said that the Democrats were unpatriotic, or worse. I am glad to know that those who rate security risks are not swayed by that bigotry.


Derrick Dortch: Congratulations on your clearance. Everyone should know that getting a security clear- ance is not based on religion, political beliefs or other things like that. What it is based on is the whole person and your suitability for a clearance. I don’t think any of us want racists


or anyone who holds negative view- points about others working for our government, but we all may have some different beliefs that we agree to disagree on. Political beliefs are not looked at in the clearance process unless informa- tion comes out about your involve- ment in something extreme. Outside of that, there is no question on any se- curity form that asks if you are a Democrat, Republican, independent, or whatever.

Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related field from an accredited college or university and ten (10) years of progressive experience in construction of large facilities such as wastewater and water treatment systems or large and complex industrial process facilities. The RDECOM CERDEC Night Vision and Electronic Sensors Directorate, Ft Belvoir, VA, is looking for an Engineer or Scientist to serve in a Scientific or Professional (ST) Position as the Senior Research Scientist for Signal and Image Processing. NVESD is located approximately 30 minutes south of Washington, D.C., and is the Army’s premier laboratory for the development of next generation electro-optical, infrared and countermine sensor technology. Over 400 engineers, scientists and technicians work together in a collaborative environment with co-located customers to field the latest EO/IR and countermine technology to the Soldier. Position is responsible for the development of new signal and image processing techniques that extract and optimize information from advanced sensors, optimizing and identifying the signal(s) associated with targets/threats while separating them fromsignals associated with background clutter and compression of sensor data for transmission over tactical sensor networks. The ST position reports directly to the Director of NVESD and is expected to identify and solve signal/image processing problems at the strategic level that have far ranging impacts to the Army.


The incumbent of this position must have specialized experience in sensor signal & image processing technology. ST positions represent the highest level of technical accomplishment & are of very limited number (approximately fifty ST positions within the Army). Typically, applicants for ST positions are expected to have a graduate degree, significant research experience, & a national or international reputation in his/her field.
