Of Ashburn, Virginia since 1986 died on Mon- day, May 3 2010 in Ashburn. He was born May 2, 1931 on the east side of Manhattan, NY to the late Joseph M. and May Cruz Pelaez. Mr. Pelaez served his country in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War and did some acting from the 1940’s to the 1960’s. He was a role model to many children over the years through his service as a camp counselor at the Lawrenceville School in Lawrenceville, NJ.Mr. Pelaez recently retired from reservation sales with United Airlines in Sterling, Virginia.


Mr. Pelaez is survived by his beloved three sisters: Elizabeth Pelaez of Poughkeepsie, NY, Adelaie Pelaez of Hoboken, NJ, Joan Wilpan of Woodside Queens, NY; two nieces, two nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.One nephew predeceased him.

OLLIE MAE SIMMONS (Lagarde) (Age 93)


Of Candler,NC, passed away on Thursday, June 17, 2010 at the John F Keever Solace Center. She was a daughter of the late FlorenceWestall and Nick Simmons. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Fitz and Brian Simmons, sister, Clara Rice and nephews, Freddy Rice and Randy Simmons.


Ollie served in the U.S. Naval Coast Guard during WWII, she moved to theWashington, DC area where she met and fell in love with William J. Lagarde. Ollie loved the outdoors, she had fond memories of fishing with her Daddy and she loved to dance. In 1986 she retired and returned home to Candler,NC.


Survivors include her son, David B. Lagarde and wife, Julia of MD; four brothers, John Simmons and wife, Dolly of Tennessee, Grady Simmons and wife, Debbie of Tennessee, James Sim- mons and wife, Alma of Candler and Ray- mond Simmons and wife Enid of Oregon; three sisters, Grace Towles, Birdie Gilbert, both of Candler and Isabelle Newcomb of Arkansas.

SHIRLEY LETTS STRYKER "Sherry" Ph.D. (Age 88)


College professor, author, Christian, and social activist, died peacefully at her home near Wichita, KS, surrounded by her family on March 17, 2010. Sherry was born in Jersey City, NJ, and lived in New England, the Far East, and Washington, DC, finally settling in the Wichita, KS, area. She received degrees from Wellesley College, American University, and Catholic University,where she earned her Ph.D. in cultural anthropology. For many years she taught various college courses, including ESL, and helped set up the Friends English Language School at Friends University, Wichita, KS, in the 1980s. She taught there for several years, using the textbook she wrote entitled “English Grammar: Form & Function.” Previously mar- ried to Gerald Stryker, she was the beloved mother of Terry Stryker Merrifield, Patricia Ann Stryker and Timothy James Stryker, who died in 1996. A service celebrating her life will be held on Saturday, July 3, 2 p.m. at theWellspring Center, 11411 Neelsville Church Road, at Dayspring Farm near Germantown, MD. Emily Marsden Verkouteren died June 14. 2010 She was 87 years old. Emily was born the fifth of Sterling Nash and Roger Marsden’s seven chil- dren. She was a native Washingtonian, spending most of her life in the Maryland-DC area. She grew up on Broad Branch Road, just inside the MD/DC line, attended nursing school at Garfield Memorial Hospital and, in 1946, married John H. Verkouteren, Jr. They raised their three children in Bethesda, MD. In 2000, Emily and John moved to the Deerfield Retirement community in Asheville, NC; they were married over 55 years when John passed away in 2002. John and Emily both lived their final years with Parkinson’s disease.

DEVEAU ROBERT JOSEPH DEVEAU (Age 73)


Of Crofton, MD, where he resided for forty years, died June 17, 2010. He was born June 24, 1936, inWoburn, MA.


Robert proudly served in the United States Marines Corps for five years, where he began his profes- sional career as a graphic designer and illustrator for the Marine Corps Gazette. Robert was a gifted artist from a young age and was the recipient of numerous awards prior to graduating from high school and later attending the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, D.C. He was a graphic designer and art director at The Washington Daily News and several firms early in his career. Having the drive and talent to go out on his own, Robert then established a successful graphic design firm, Robert DeVeau Advertising, located inWashington, D.C., which was in business for thirty-five years.


During this time his talent became well-known and respected in the metro area. He was commissioned by The White House (under the Reagan and Bush Administrations) to create caricatures for several special events. He was also selected to design The White House News Photographers Association Annual Awards Book for several years. He finished his career working in advertising sales for The Washington Times.


Robert enjoyed live theater, writing and producing his own plays Midnight Oil and Act of Murder. He was a member of the Crofton Players Guild and enjoyed set design, as well as acting for The Colonial Players of Annapolis, MD, and several other local theatre groups. A dedicated member


of the community, he was involved in the Crofton Kiwanis and often volunteered his time and art- work to local charities and events. Being a kind- hearted man, Robert also volunteered as a Hugger for the Special Olympics.


Throughout the years, he enjoyed traveling and vacationing with his wife Jane and three daughters every summer. He was a fantastic dancer, played the trombone, liked magic tricks and had a great sense of humor. He was a loyal friend, amazing father, and loving husband.


He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Jennie DeVeau (Bova); and his brother, George DeVeau.


He is survived by his wife of forty-three years, Jane DeVeau (Cool); his son Christopher DeVeau of Eglisau, Switzerland; his daughters, Robin Randall of Ashburn, VA, Danielle Crawford of Severna Park, MD, Jacqueline McHale of Silver Spring, MD; brother, Edward DeVeau of Victorville, CA; sons- in-law, John Crawford and Anthony McHale, and daughter-in-law, Bea DeVeau; four grandchildren, Sarah, Charlotte, Cameron and Isla.

Over the years, Emily spent some of her spare time duck-pin bowling and as an active member of The Wives of Sigma Chi, a neighborhood phantom bridge club and the alumni organization of the Garfield Nursing School, but her first priority and greatest passion was always her family. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, and thoroughly enjoyed gatherings with friends and family members.


Emily is survived by her three children, J. Adrian Verkouteren of Silver Spring, MD; Jane Verkouteren and her husband Steve Bona of Jacksonville, FL; Anna Verkouteren Allen and her husband ReverendWayne Allen of Shelby, NC.; two grandchildren, Ashley Allen, of Asheville, NC, and Benjamin Allen and his wife Katie of Wilmington, NC.; her brother George Marsden and his wife Betty of Newport, NC.; her very good friend, Setsuko Simmons of Silver Spring, MD.

Doris Williams, age 92, died peacefully June 9, 2010. She was the cherished mother of Paul, David, and John Horner and is survived by all three sons, three grandchildren, and two great- grandchildren. Doris was born in Chicago, IL, lived nearly 70 years in San Diego, CA, and most recently resided at the Hermitage in Alexandria,VA. She was a citizen of the world, living briefly in Tsingtao, China, and in Manila – a friend of all. She was a life-long Methodist who inspired others with her love of God and her artistic expression. Services will be scheduled at a later date. Donations to Capital Hospice are requested in lieu of flowers.
