Airbus struggled to deliver the super jumbo, Spairliners is today supporting eight A380s, a number that is to double by year-end. It offers 1,300 part numbers, made available from its Paris CDG airport main inventory and other locations.

“Our current contracts cover a

total 47 aircraft, either delivered or to be delivered in the coming years,” CEO Jean-Luc Fattelay told Aviation Maintenance. Qantas began operating its first A380 in October 2008, Air France in October 2009 and Lufthansa is to follow suit in May of this year. As of late March, Spairliners was supporting six Qantas and two Air France aircraft. “We supply flight deck parts—including avionics—for three flight simulators at the same airlines,” CFO Georg Fanta added. One challenge Fanta and Fattelay

mentioned is new aircraft reliability. Sometimes, a component is not as dependable as expected. In that case, the inventory for that component has to be increased. Under specific agreements, Spairliners can then get free spare parts from the OEMs, through action of mother companies Air France Industries and Lufthansa Technik. Sometimes, reliability is better than expected. “It is not abnormal to have some deviations from our own predictions on such a new aircraft,” Fanta said. Spairliners has 12 employees. Most

of them are based at the company’s headquarters in Hamburg. The other ones are in Sydney — close to Qantas’ base — and in Paris CDG, at the central stock. Fattelay emphasized one benefit for

his customers is definitely the scale effect on investment. According to him, Qantas, Lufthansa or Air France would have had to invest 30 or 40 percent more in spare parts, without
