“horseless” Studebaker made its appearance – the face of
“touring” changed forever. It must be a trait of human nature
to look back when celebrating anniversaries, but I’d like to think that the best part of
an anniversary is the view forward. Like a treasured photograph, you look back – at the
years filled with momentous events, at colorful characters met along the way who
shaped an entire industry. And then you look forward, with the clarity of vision that
Dan Mahar and Arthur Tauck
comes from the past – and creates the future.
1991 – Yellow Roads of Europe
European Group Travel Reinvented
Arthur Jr. spent the mid-1950s in Germany with the U.S. Air
Force, and had a strong wish for Tauck’s guests – he wanted
to bring them to the “real” Europe, the Europe they had in
their mind’s eye. The advent of the Yellow Roads changed
European guided tours in two ways: first, it captured the
image of the European vacation that guests held in their
imaginations (the desire for authenticity, off the motorways);
and second, travelers in Tauck’s groups were treated as
individuals rather than as “groups” with à la carte dining, no group check-in and more.
A new, more enriching way of exploring began.
1993 – Small Ship Cruise Tours
For Tauck, it’s all about the destination. For traditional cruise companies, it’s all about the
boat. And that’s a really big difference. The entire Tauck family shares a passion for sailing,
so combining the company’s signature land touring with small ship cruising in destinations
across the globe was a natural. They began with the destination and cultural sightseeing, then
handpicked the finest yachts or expeditionary ships in the region. In the new millennium,
Tauck’s European river cruising, aboard a new riverboat fleet, puts the same emphasis on cultural
sightseeing and special experiences.
2003 – First Family Tours
Industry research confirmed what we already knew in 2002 – family
travel was one of the fastest growing travel trends, and was largely
ignored by the escorted tour market. Tauck Bridges family travel
became the first separate business unit since the beginning of Tauck,
and in the short time frame until present day it has become the leading
guided family travel company in the U.S.
2003 – Leading the way to Voluntourism
Sustainable Travel in the National Parks
Beginning in 2003, Tauck had a tremendous impact on the travel industry with our guest
on-tour Voluntourism projects in Yellowstone (and subsequently Grand Teton) national parks.
From painting to gardening to reforestation, guests give a few hours of their time; they’ve told
us that they truly feel a pride of ownership in these parks that belong to us all. The program
caught on quickly… fast forwarding to 2006, Tauck received the Preserve America Presidential
Robin Tauck (center) and Tauck Directors Clinton Scott and
Award, presented to Arthur Tauck Jr. and Robin Tauck at a White House ceremony.
