“WOW Moments”
You can’t put a price on a treasured
memory. One of my favorite “wow
moments” happened in Italy with my
brother-in-law, Peter Tauck. Now, the
movie Spartacus happens to be one of
my favorites, and the Appian Way – the
oldest and most important road of the
Roman Republic – played a big role
in the story of the Third Servile War,
between Spartacus, his fellow slaves and
several Roman armies. It was on this
ancient road that Spartacus, and all of
that incredible Roman history, really came alive for me. It was an experience
I will never forget.
I wanted future guests to have their own Appian Way experience similar to
mine, so we set out and discovered the perfect restaurant on a scenic stretch
of the Appian Way. The owner of the restaurant invites each Tauck group
to see his “wine cellar.” The surprise is that the wine cellar is actually an
ancient catacomb dating back to the Roman Republic. The ceiling of the
catacomb is part of the foundation of the Appian Way itself. As the owner
tells the history of the building, history comes alive. If you are not traveling
with Tauck, you will miss this experience. It is a good example of how special
access can lead to one of these real “wow moments.” This is what Tauck’s
