NORTH AMERICA
The Best Idea...
It was both fun and moving watching “The National Parks:
America’s Best Idea” on PBS this past fall. Ken Burns made
the compelling argument that the national parks are as uniquely
American as the Declaration of Independence: “that the most
special places in the nation should be preserved, not for royalty
or the rich, but for everyone.” Tauck takes particular pride in the
national parks because our histories are very much entwined.
Tauck currently visits over 50 national parks. We went to our first in
1926, the second year of operations. Early itineraries included Acadia,
the Great Smoky Mountains and Shenandoah. In the 1930s and
1940s, the eastern parks of Canada were added. In the 1960s, Arthur
Tauck Jr. was among the first to use air travel to popularize the great
parks of the American West with travelers from the east coast. He
fought hard to obtain rights to stay in the magnificent inside-the-park
hotels that had traditionally been reserved for rail passengers.
The national parks have been an
important part of Tauck’s success and
have also been our biggest partner in
our tradition of “giving back.” For decades we have been involved in
implementing sustainable tourism practices within the parks — long
before it became fashionable; examples include: financial grants
and manpower to preserve the ancient relics of Mesa Verde National
Park, and Tauck’s award-winning Guest Volunteer Program, through
which over 10,000 guests have volunteered their time.
In 2010, Tauck and our guests continue this tradition of giving
back to the parks with volunteer opportunities in Grand Teton
National Park. We hope to see you there; the paintbrushes are
on us! For more information, visit:
