istory may record the most consequential aspect of President Donald Trump’s first Cabinet meet-
ing this term to be how it opened — in prayer. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Scott Turner, a former NFL cornerback turned Texas politi- cian, led the Cabinet in bowing their heads and thanking God “for giving us this opportunity to restore faith in this country.” Afterward, the president told Turn- er, “That was a very good job you did.
You’ve done that before, haven’t you?” It was an effective laugh line con-
sidering that just a few months prior, Turner was serving as an associate pastor at Prestonwood Baptist Church in Plano, Texas. His elevation to the Cabinet and
the president’s acknowledgement of God’s role in saving his life last sum- mer in Butler, Pennsylvania, have clearly revved up the evangelical com- munity.
