Fear of Flying Passengers on edge amid airline crashes, near misses. A
southwest airlines plane nearly collides with a business jet at Chicago Midway Airport in February, another in a sudden string of acci- dents and near misses that have left passen-

west plane was forced to perform a last-minute go-around after a private jet began to enter the main runway without airport tower authorization. Video footage from the airport shows the Southwest
flight was forced to abort a landing when the smaller plane started crossing the runway, forcing the Southwest aircraft to quickly lift. The plane landed safely about 10 minutes later. No one was hurt. It was the latest in a series of incidents this year that
have frightened flyers and drawn attention to airplane safety.

There was a near miss at the same Virginia airport a
month later when an American Airlines flight had to per- form a go-around to avoid another plane that was depart- ing from the same runway.
