STUDIO LAMBERT (All3Media)

ceo Stephen Lambert creative director Tim Harcourt head of drama Sue Hogg turnover £90.6m shows Gogglebox (C4), The Circle (Netflix), Three Families (BBC1)

Studio Lambert’s output spans entertainment, fact ent and drama and continues to thrive as a

07 RAW (All3Media) founder Dimitri Doganis md Piers Vellacott CEO Joely Fether fd Jane Gant COO Fiona Clarke co founder Bart Layton EVP US Sam Maynard turnover £58.1m shows Gold Rush (Discovery), Dream Horse (Film 4/ Warner Bros), Heathrow (ITV), The Ripper (Netflix)

After a tough couple of years, the outlook is “promising,” says Raw “with significant opportunity across all genres, in particular scripted and programming for a wider range of SVODS.” The challenges are the “shortfall of talent” to produce it and rising costs not being met by UK broadcasters who “may continue to struggle to be competitive” with international streamers “as they aren’t able to offer the same level of funding to producers.”

powerhouse of new long running formats, with its turnover now far surpassing its pre-COVID level. The company says that its

biggest highlight over the past year has simply been “radically adapting our ways of working because of the pandemic so we could still deliver many productions and so continue to grow our business.” Despite this, along with

everyone else, COVID protocols have put a strain on the business, especially when it comes to deciding who should pay the extra costs. “The streamers and US buyers have been better than UK buyers at covering these costs in full.”

Gogglebox Studio Lambert says the out

look for the year ahead is good and “demand for great shows is high and everyone seems to be busy” (although that has led to challenges in “recruiting top quality staff.”)

A looming worry is, of course,

the possible change in Channel 4’s ownership. “The government arguments for privatising Channel 4 make no sense and will reduce the number of suppliers in the sector,” it says.

08 CARNIVAL FILMS (NBCUniversal Int’l) Executive Chairman & CEO Gareth Neame md Nigel Marchant turnover £52m shows Belgravia (EPIX), The Last Kingdom (Netflix)

Drama specialist, Carnival Films, describes the outlook as generally “positive” with an upcoming second Downton movie and dramas on the slate. It says a highlight for the company was simply battling through with scripted productions in the face of restrictions when it “shot two films over the pandemic without having to shut down.” The biggest impact has been “budgets having to accommodate COVID costs” as well as an “ever changing marketplace and tougher deals.”

09 LIME PICTURES (All3Media) md Claire Poyser md Kate Little turnover £50.7m shows Hollyoaks, The Only Way is Essex, Zero Chill, Celebs Go Dating

“Continuing to shoot a continuing drama for much of the Covid pandemic” was obviously a big relief for Hollyoaks producer, Lime. But it’s not been easy: “Covid costs have increased production budgets by between 10-20%, with some broadcasters more supportive than others,” it says. And that could be the case for a while. “Covid uncertainty and the limited supply of production staff means margins continue to be challenged,” it says.

10 BAD WOLF CEO Jane Tranter COO Natasha Hale HoP Alex Protherough head of finance Mary Furlong turnover £49.8m shows I Hate Suzie (Sky One/HBO Max), His Dark Materials S2 (BBC1/HBO), Industry (BBC2/ HBO), A Discovery of Witches S2 (Sky One/AMC)

Covid seems to have barely slowed the pace of Bad Wolf’s upward trajectory with a host of large scale returning series continuing to emerge from its mini studio set up (it’s now joining BBC Studios on the production of the next Doctor Who series). It says “despite lockdown restrictions - and having to complete 33 hours of post remotely - with crews split over not only countries, but time zones - Bad Wolf was able to bring two returning series and two new series to the screen, with significant critical success.”
