The possibilities for virtual production are extraordinary. Artists can scout, build, adapt and light a scene within an LED volume while the director’s on set, but where the artists could be hundreds of miles away and remote from each other.


If the data is where you are viewing it, then where the artists are makes no difference. The director can be reviewing and making changes to the scene in real time.


Parallel workflows


What has been a linear, sequential process can be collapsed into a much more parallel process with artists collaboratively modelling, creating layouts, light path tracing and applying other visual effects. And all of this creativity is achieved synchronously within the same model with full version control. This can dramatically accelerate turnaround times, save money and deliver a better outcome with a greater focus on the overall creative intent.


Latency is not an issue. At Escape Technology, we’ve been testing this new workflow, running systems from London and Dublin with artists as far away as Sofia and Rome without any perceptual loss of performance. It as if the data is local but the machines can be hundreds of miles away. The perceptual issue only becomes prevalent if the artist is working on the other side of the planet but there are already products coming through that can fix that issue.

And by putting that compute and storage as close together as possible, the artist can be anywhere in the world harnessing the potential that NVIDIA Omniverse and Pixar USD offer. The collaborative, parallel utilisation of Pixar USD on the NVIDIA Omniverse platform combined with the performance of the virtual RTX renderer significantly speeds up the iterative process and improves the end creative.

By placing HP’s Z4R workstations in the data centre next to the storage and utilising NVIDIA Mellanox to achieve greater performance, the artist can pull thousands of files rather than single files, with up to a 100gig network if required.


The artist is no longer loading a single 3DS Max or Maya file one at a time, but instead could be loading hundreds, if not thousands of USD files simultaneously.
