BEYOND THE CAPITAL The regeneration of Kelvin Hall as a TV studio is reflective of another dynamic shaping the market – the push by broadcasters to meet Ofcom targets to produce more content outside London to better reflect the UK on screen. It’s a key reason for BBC Studioworks’


decision to diversify out of its historical London heartland at Elstree and Television Centre and into production hubs in Glasgow and Cardiff. Notably, Versa are launching their studios in Manchester and Leeds as well as London. “An increasing number of shows, old and


new, are being asked to look beyond London by UK commissioners. So, we are facing into that challenge with our partners to see what is achievable and by when,” says Moultrie. He thinks the London market will remain


buoyant, particularly for shows that often rely on international talent who fly in to the city’s airports and for streamer shows that aren’t subject to Ofcom regulation.


Moultrie says that BBC Studioworks is looking


to expand its footprint still further outside London, perhaps by striking more agreements such as its recent deal to manage four sound stages at BBC Roath Lock Studios in Cardiff. This move into managing sound stages – which


can act as hybrid spaces for entertainment or drama – represents another form of diversification for BBC Studioworks at a time when growth opportunities in the multi camera entertainment market are limited. Other operators are diversifying too. As

February ‘22 Versa Studios opens Versa ABC, a 5,000 sq ft studio overlooking Manchester City centre.Versa Studios also took over the Manchester Studios complex. Versa will “substantially” renew and launch five further studios in 2023, totalling an additional 55,000 sq ft of studio facilities, two of which will be fully equipped for TV broadcast. Versa Manchester and Versa ABC studios will join the recently launched Versa London which hosted ITV’s game show, Walk the Line. Versa Studios also has plans to launch in Leeds December ‘21 BBC Studioworks is named as operator of the new TV studio at Kelvin Hall in central Glasgow. The move marks stage one of BBC Studioworks’ ambitions to open additional studios across the UK, and is in direct response to growing demand to make more TV shows in Scotland. The 10,500 sq. ft studio, co-funded by the Scottish Government and Glasgow City Council, will open in autumn 2022 and will house a wide array of entertainment shows across multiple genres. October ‘21 Twickenham Film Studios hires Edward Harvey as Head of TV Studios. The new TV Studio at Twickenham will be designed to deliver dedicated studio space in West London to produce new shiny floor entertainment shows.
