want people who are passionate and dedicated to protecting the palaces and collections. There is normally a waiting list to join our teams. Safety is paramount and working at an incident could be the most dangerous thing anyone ever has to do. We do not expect our teams to be in smoke fi lled rooms, but even on the periphery of the fi re our teams need to be well protected. That means protective overalls, boots, gloves, headgear with miner’s head lamps, and overcoats for outdoor work. The salvage and recovery coordinators wear identifying tabards. A risk assessment of the likely risks must be carried out, as must dynamic briefi ngs on the day. We must be able to account for our teams if they go inside the buildings, so we set up tally systems at the entry point to the building. We follow the instructions of the fi re service and know the evacuation signal – the blowing of whistles. No matter how historic an object is, nothing is as precious as life.
