CORRESPONDENCE

Nuclear Meltdown Dear T&G, Brilliant cover!

All of the manufacturers wholesalers have been drawn blindfolded into having two main retailers.

Now the tail is wagging the dog. They were warned!

David Barden Walkers of Trowell

Editor: It looks like some are beginning to wake from a slumber. You can’t halt progress, but you always want to be in charge of your own destiny. As the two retailers in question press ahead with their own branding, i’m sure more will wake up!

STYLISH FLEECE IN CLASSIC DESIGN SANDHEM JACKET AND WAISTCOAT

Wholesalers are to blame These lunatics are killing the trade.

No local shops = no kids coming into fi shing = less and less customers. Look at coarse rod licences; down by half in six years. So far this year, Cumbria has lost three tackle shops and I fi nish after the New Year. The only people who can fi x this are manufacturers and distributors. Quite simply; stop supplying the outlets who are selling at ridiculous prices.

I’ve been in the trade for more than 20 years and have run a tackle shop of my own since 2001. Mail order has always been a challenge I’ve had to address but the last 18 months has been ridiculous. I’m seeing reels sold by the discounters for £70 at 7-10% gross profi t, with free carriage, so by the time they’ve paid for the carriage, packing material, some dumb schmuck to pack it, card fees and web hosting, they’re making a loss and never mind the odd missing package, or returned reel under warranty. Those supplying the discounters at ever lower prices than the best trade deal ordinary shops can hope to see deserve everything they get and it sure as hell isn’t going to be a profi table future.

I’ll be glad to be out of this and due to unexpected good fortune, I don’t need concern myself about scraping up enough to live on from selling off my remaining stock. Roll on 2018, when I pick up my new rifl es, dust off my fi shing tackle and start to regain the love of angling and the outdoors that I’ve sorely missed. Oh & you can quote every damn’ word I’ve written. ;-)

Editor: We hear you and we don’t disagree. Local shops are the fi rst port of call for most newbie anglers and without those, who knows where we’ll end up. Thank you for your letter, Mike - and please, enjoy your retirement!
