It’s now been more than 50 years since the M16 was first invented. T&G finds out more....

he 5.56mm calibre M16, offi cially designated rifl e, was a United States military adaptation of the ArmaLite AR-15 rifl e. The fi rst M16 variant adopted operationally, originally by the US Air Force, was equipped with triangular handguards. In 1964, the M16 entered US military service and the following year was deployed for jungle warfare operations during the Vietnam War. The M16 has also been widely adopted by other militaries

around the world. Total worldwide production of M16s has been approximately eight million, making it the most-produced fi rearm of its 5.56mm calibre.
