WELSH AFFAIRS COMMITTEE LAUNCH INQUIRY INTO CANCELLATION OF RAIL ELECTRIFICATION

A primary school in Botswana will receive a new school bus to save pupils walking miles to school in searing heat, thanks to Pentwyn business CD Gray & Associates. Cardiff

Gray
is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year and decided to raise £10,000 towards the cost of providing a new mini bus for Mabele Primary School in Botswana. Glyn Coed Primary
School has helped fundraising for the project and filled the bus with gifts for pupils before it
starts its journey to
Botswana. The bus will travel by ship for 17 days from Sheerness to Walvis Bay on the Namibian coast and arrive with the school ready for the school run on 16 October. Chris Gray, Managing Director CD Gray, visited the school in Mabele, Northern Botswana, last October and was moved by the sight of Primary
School children having to walk 4 to 5 miles to and from school each day in temperatures of up to 42 degrees C in dangerous areas frequented by wild animals.
Chris Gray says; “The journey to and from school should be safe for every child so we thought we would do something practical for Mabele school to mark our company’s 25th birthday. Working with local Glyn Coed Primary we have purchased the bus and filled it with gifts for the school including
tennis balls, footballs, school equipment etc and also fans to make the
temperatures in
the classrooms more tolerable.”
The project is linked with GlynCoed Primary School in Pentwyn adjacent to CD Gray’s offices. The children are writing letters to Mabele Primary pupils and
as part of a scheme to link
helping with
other schools
worldwide and raise their awareness of the differences between their own school environment and that in Africa.

The Welsh Affairs Committee has announced a new inquiry into the cancellation of plans to electrify rail between Cardiff and Swansea. The inquiry follows the announcement in July by the Secretary of State for Transport, Chris Grayling to cancel plans to electrify the railway to Swansea, replacing electrification with bi-mode trains, promising that the change in transport strategy for south Wales would remove the need for disruptive works and prove to be better value for money. Plans to electrify the Great Western Mainline between Swansea and Paddington Station in London were first announced in 2012, but have been hit by a series of delays and cost overruns. Electrification will continue along the rest of the line, but the 60 mile stretch between Swansea and Cardiff has been cancelled. Announcing the inquiry, Committee Chair David TC Davies commented: “The Government has decided to cancel plans to electrify the route between Cardiff and Swansea, and instead announced investment in new rolling stock and station improvements. We have launched this inquiry to examine the reasoning behind this decision”. The Welsh Affairs Committee is inviting evidence on the following issues: • The arguments for and against electrification of the railways.
• The cost of electrification of the railways in Wales. • How cancelling electrification will impact Swansea and Cardiff.
• The case for devolving rail infrastructure spending to the Welsh Government Interested parties are requested to keep to a word limit of 3,000 words and to focus on key areas that the Committee should investigate during its inquiry. The deadline for written submissions will be 6 November.
