OPINIONS, FACTS, STORIES AND WHAT’S NEW IN THE FASCINATING WORLD OF YACHTING
YACHTIE TYPES THE NANNY
She thought accompanying the family she nannies for on a yacht for the holidays would be glamorous and exciting! Until 4 minutes in when she discovered she gets violently seasick. Oh dear… Try entertaining wee ones with a barf bag in one hand and a ginger tea in the other. Then Madame asks you to help the stews out with housekeeping too because looking after a group of cooped up mini dictators isn’t hard enough. Never mind, you’ll be able to relax and top up that tan soon, oh no… wait, Madame and the Boss need some quiet time from their ‘hectic lives’ and just want some space to relax.
OCEAN CONSERVATION Reef conservation is a big deal and recently we’ve seen Australia commit to help saving the Great Barrier Reef. Bleaching, caused by global warming, has been at its worst in the past two years and is a world wide problem – increased ocean temperatures are killing off the coral.
GO LARGE We like big boats and cannot lie. Seems to be the huge trend across the interior crew this season in the Med, with everyone seeking 60m+ yachts to join. The smaller yachts struggled to find their stews this season, maybe there will be a shift back next season?
MOTHER’S RUIN Flavoured gins are on the rise – everyone likes to get posh drunk… because who doesn’t love a good gincident? Rhubarb and Ginger is our current favourite. Plus it comes in a rather pretty purpley pink bottle don’t you know.
SOCIAL MEDIA This plague on our society is being drastically reduced on many yachts this season, captains and owners alike are switching off the internet during the day.

NAUTICAL
ETYMOLOGY...ALOOF
Meaning distant physically or emotionally, aloof was originally a nautical word. When a captain wanted to “keep the ship’s head to the wind,” therefore staying “clear of a lee-shore or some other quarter,” he’d order the ship to keep aloof. Aloof comes partially from luff, “the sailing of a ship close to the wind.”
All of us have in our veins the exact same percentage of salt in our blood that exists in the ocean, and,
therefore, we have salt in our blood, in our sweat, in our tears. John F. Kennedy
MAGNIFICENT MARINER AMERIGO VESPUCCI
Born on March 9th, 1454 in Florence, Italy, Amerigo Vespucci was a prominent Italian explorer, cartographer, merchant, navigator and financier. He is famous for coining the term the ‘New World.’ This super-continent was eventually named by Martin Waldseemuller ‘America’, which is a feminised Latin version of his name Amerigo. Waldseemuller’s new world map, created in 1507, was based on Vespucci’s expeditions. It was the first map to accurately depict a separate Western Hemisphere and the Pacific Ocean. Between 1497 and 1504, the explorer made four voyages from Spain to the
New World, the first alleged voyage lasted from May 1497, until October 1498. Europe became acquainted with the results of his groundbreaking expeditions after the publication of two letters, by Amerigo Vespucci. His second voyage, in the service of Spain, resulted in the discovery of the Amazon River, the Orinoco River and Trinidad.
MEDIA Superyachting has had some negative media coverage recently with British tabloids branding the industry as offering slave conditions and accusing the industry of not caring about crew accidents. Not cool. And not true.
COMMITMENT The degree of flakiness amongst crew this year was on the increase! After committing to the role, letting the captain buy flight tickets, having uniforms ordered etc, and then turning around last minute and saying “nah, found a better offer” was rife. It seems the crew are becoming more money driven than ever over experience.
CROCS WITH INBUILT SOCKS They appeared this spring. What is wrong with people? When would this ever be considered fashionable? And don’t get us started on the platform croc. Can these not be outlawed as a single use plastic and complete banned? Please?
RECRUITMENT SCAMS Yes they’re back. Haven’t we told you before. Do not hand over any money to an agency. Ask your friends about an agency – get good referrals and only deal with a correctly registered agency – do your homework.
