exception is the GC32 class, which will have up to five races a day. This popular and exciting foiling multihull class, which attracts top-ranked sailors such as French sailing superstar Franck Cammas, is using this the Copa Del Rey as the third event in the class’ European circuit series for the second year in a row. With speeds reaching 30+knots and its own dedicated course, this class will undoubtedly wow the crowds once again at the end of July.

RUNNERS AND RIDERS As well as the TP52 Alegre, there will be plenty of teams returning to defend their titles from last year including Dieter Schön’s crew aboard the Maxi 72 Momo from Germany who won its class, and fellow German competitor Christian Plump’s Swan 45 Elena Nova who hopes to make it two wins in a row in MRW Swan 45 class. Plump said until last year, a win at this event had eluded the team: “We won Palma Vela, the Swan 45 worlds in Porto Cervo, plus the


ORC worlds in 2010 and in 2007 and the IMS worlds, so to win it, felt good.”


Other returning winning competitors from Spain include Pedro Campos, who won BMW ORC2 class on the Rodman 42 Sum Innovation. Last year Campos entered the record books as the regatta’s most successful skipper after his 10th event win.. Jose Maria Meseguer’s Pez de Abril who won the Swan 42 is another competitor out to defend his title, as is Marc de Antonio Altimira on a J/80 Bribon Movistar.


CREW POSSIBILITIES For the duration of the Copa del Rey – MAPFRE, the Real Club Náutico de Palma is open to racing sailors with previous regatta experience. Those who are stationed in Palma could take time out to potentially compete in the regatta.
