STAR CREW

Once again Barcelona played host to the MYBA Charter Show delivering a spectacular selection of yachts, record breaking attendance levels and serving up new and exciting crew competitions

C

ompetition is an inevitable part of life and, when it is healthy, it is far from a necessary evil. In fact, at MYBA The Worldwide Yachting Association we

strongly believe that it can be an effective tool for personal and professional growth. This is reflected in the fact that four important competitions are now held during the annual MYBA Charter Show. They are designed to encourage the participation of all the crew and to allow them to truly shine. Competing at the highest of levels can exercise a lot of pressure but it also offers a lot of satisfaction and the opportunity to learn.

Maybe the crew of a yacht provide the same services as others in the industry but with more personalisation or through a unique approach. Perhaps they provide solutions with extra imagination or use a secret recipe. Whatever it is that sets them apart, competitions such as those that are held during the MYBA Charter Show enable them to identify these traits and harness them. Once identified they can be used to create a unique atmosphere on board which is key to achieving customer satisfaction and strongly influences customer loyalty.

The yacht chefs that participated in the 2018 MYBA Superyacht Chefs’ Competition were challenged with a particularly difficult theme. Five different types of finger food. It may sound simple but they all admitted that they needed to put on their thinking caps in order to be able to encapsulate multiple flavours in just one bite. The first place winners were Lauren Everet of S/Y SEAHAWK in the 56m and over category, Andrea Compidonico of M/Y VICTORY in the 43 to 55m category, and James Wright of M/Y AWOL in the 42m and under category.

Tablescaping was the next well established competition and the theme given for the decoration of the lunch or dinner table was MYBA’s 30th Anniversary. Pearls, shells and an air of quiet elegance were the main characteristics. First place was awarded to Tabitha Lewtas of M/Y JOY in the 56m and over category, Katarina Markioli of M/Y AIAXAIA in the 43 to 55m category, and Giverny Cowie of M/Y AWOL in the 42m and under category.

During the 2018 Show, a Meet & Greet Competition was held for the very first time. The interior crew had 10 minutes at their disposal to “meet & greet” the judges as if they were charter guests stepping on board for the first time. First impressions were made with great care and finesse and the first place winners were Captain Dean Pilatti and the crew of M/Y JAGUAR in the 56m and over category, Captains Simon Ladbrooke/Sean Read and the crew of M/Y ELIXIR in the 43 to 55m category, and Captain Tristan Mortlock and the crew of M/Y AWOL in the 42m and under category.

The 2018 MYBA Charter Show also saw the introduction of a new competition for deck crew called “All Hands on Deck”. In this case, the crew had to prepare an entertainment programme that would engage charterers of different ages on a day characterised by weather and technical constraints.

The situation to be handled with creativity was: “You are anchored in a Mediterranean bay where the use of power watercraft is forbidden (using the tender for going ashore is allowed). The sea is flat, the sun is shining, there is a good breeze, but the yacht will have to stay in the bay for the whole day. The charter party consists of 10 guests in total as follows: 5 adults (one of whom is over 70 years old), 3 teenagers and 2 x 8 year olds. How would you organise the fun activities throughout the day, to ensure that all members of the party participate and enjoy themselves?”

The yachts ATLANTIC GOOSE, AWOL, JOY, LAZY Z, LEGEND, MARAYA and TITANIA participated in the inaugural competition and the winner was M/Y MARAYA which employed pirates, lions and a pink flamingo during their 10-minute presentation. The new competition was warmly welcomed by all and we hope to see more hands on deck in 2019! Congratulations to the winners and a warm thank you to all participants.
